If the microphone stops working during your speech, firstly don't panic! You could come up to the front of stage and raise your pitch a little so everyone can still hear you. If you feel its appropriate a little humour around the mic failing could go a long way in breaking the ice and reassuring your audience that all is well. Keep eye contact with your audience to stay connected. Stay calm and keep going with your message like nothing happened. This shows confidence, and the audience will stay interested because they see you're handling the situation smoothly. Your message will still be strong even without the microphone.

You only lose impact of your message if you let it throw you off. If you can talk loud enough for the audience hear as this allows the AV individuals to understand you are buying them a little time. If you have too large of an audience try to walk around to allow the audience to hear as well as possible. It shows you can remain calm and adjust on the spot. This sometimes will build more credibility with your audience.
