Deadlines are important as customer plans a lot of things based on that and these requirements should be reviewed before start of algo. But if there comes a situation where algo change is required then it should be communicated along with the benefits they would get if done in a certain way.

In case of any major algorithm change which might impact delivery timeline: We will discuss internally with the respective Developers, QA & DevOps to have a detailed analysis over expected impact on project timeline (considering both 1) happy path and 2) worst case scenarios) and note down additional efforts and time necessary from all the involved team members. We will draft a concise report/presentation based on consensus. Then, we will inform immediate Senior member (e.g. Delivery Manager) about the proposed amendment to project timeline for his/her feedback. According, we will propose the client with a fail-safe estimate and factor analysis for extension of deadline or any minor changes to SoW to accommodate the algorithm changes.

Usually I use zero_sum game strategy. I explain the risks and benefits, honestly. Then I clearly define possible scenarios and In most cases, we agree and follow the best solution. I Believe that a good project is the one which had good design but a great one is the project that can adapt and is growing in time as we , our problems and world are.

In general the client will be happy if we are changing the algorithm because if we want to improve the system performance, so inform the client about the same, No one wants a faulty system. Also convince laymen language like giving examples which can relate with the project and how this change makes the client earn extra bucks with some more investment. But be sure about this because if doing this again and again can lose your reputation in the market.

My perspective is that we can keep the code as it is and lower down the promotional campaign which will control the traffic on the website and do the changes in the background. This will make sure that the client earns from the website. In the background we can make the changes with some extra effort and test the functionality and push it on the live. Of course this will take a little extra time but we can win the trust of the client and maybe he/she can offer other project where we can compensate this extra time.

If you start with the goal, "might is right", we will cook up excuses as we sail, we will "talk over", only then we will get into problems.
