No one likes to deliver bad news , but act swiftly - it’s better to hear it from you rather than through misinformation or hearsay. Be clear and transparent, particularly around mitigation measures and what you plan to do to ensure no further delays. Listen to your stakeholders needs, and look into constructive ways that you can minimise any impact to them (working hours, rescheduling work sequences to minimise disruption or noise to third parties. Get everyone’s buy in as far as possible to the recovery plan.

Apprise all the stakeholders about this extension with the direction containing priorities of works and sensetized all the relevant stakeholders to be remained focussed to their respective goals to be completed within new deadlines.

While this can be seen as a setback, if handled well, it will improve stakeholder relationships. Three keys to handling this are: 1) Communicate the delay as soon as possible. Do not avoid the conversation; 2) Be honest and detailed about why the delay has occurred; 3) Provide a recovery plan and report on your follow-thru on the plan….Over-communicate in this phase. I’ve found most stakeholders are reasonable and will be understanding if you take this approach. Navigating this adversity together can build even stronger relationships that can endure the next setback as well.
