Your presentation is interrupted by unexpected screen freezing. How do you keep your audience engaged?
A frozen screen during a presentation can be unnerving, but your response can keep the audience with you. Here’s how to stay on track:
- Address the issue briefly and with humor if appropriate; this relieves tension and shows confidence.
- Engage the audience by asking relevant questions or encouraging discussion while the issue is resolved.
- Have a backup of your presentation in print or on another device to continue without delay.

A quick joke would help relieve the tension. Next, you ensure you engage your audience. Ask them questions about what they've learnt so far and get feedbacks. Then explain some essential points you still have in your memory. Story telling is also a great tool to use at this point.

When your screen freezes mid-presentation, here’s how to handle it with confidence and humor: Stay Cool: Don’t panic. Instead, smile and say something like, “Looks like my computer is as stunned by this content as you are!” A light joke helps put everyone at ease. Address the Issue: Let the audience know what’s happening without making it a big deal. “Seems like we’re having a little tech hiccup, but that’s not going to stop us.” Keep Going: Continue without the slides if possible. Deliver your key points verbally, keeping the audience engaged with your energy. If you stay calm and collected, your audience will, too. It’s all about how you handle the moment.

In 20 years of speaking…One of the most impressive things you can ever do to an audience is to keep the show rolling when technology acts up. Whether it’s a PowerPoint glitch, dead microphone, viewing monitor that went pitch black… Murphy’s Law teaches us.. that which can go wrong typically goes wrong at the right time. You can’t always depend on technology but you can depend on yourself when you know your content. This is why you must KNOW your message, stories, analogies, audience interaction points, and principles like you know your date of birth and social security number. The best speakers in the world know the best cheat code is to not have to use technology to stand on. Know your content. Period.

As a professor I have faced this situation of screen freezing & beamer not working many times. However I keep my audience engaged in following ways: 1. Telling a related story: Share an interesting anecdote or example that reinforces your key points. 2. Ask the audience questions: Involve them by encouraging interaction, asking for opinions or experiences. 3. Continue speaking without the slides: If you know the content well, continue explaining the material verbally while addressing key points. 4. Use humor: Lighten the mood by making a light joke about the technical glitch, keeping the atmosphere positive while the issue is resolved.

An unfortunate but very common problem which surfaces every now and then. Few ways to tackle this: 1) First things first don't panic! We are all at the mercy of technology in one way or the other 2) Explain to the audience what is happening 3) This may be a good time to entertain questions and even start a discussion with the audience 4) If you can proceed without the slides then continue your presentation with a few tweaks 5) Decide on the maximum time you will give in case you can't function without the slides. You can always reschedule to a later date.
