Your photographer missed a crucial deadline. How will you salvage your multimedia storytelling project?

There are times, even as a photographer, I do not have time to shoot organic photographs for a design project, or ad that I need to get posted. Stock imagery can be a very nice short-cut, of sorts, to getting quality images quickly. There are many outlets, but since I am a pretty dedicated original Adobe user I have only used Adobe Stock (AS) images. Using AS as a service, or file-by-file, you have a few options for pricing, usage-rights, etc. These factors will differ, depending on the license you need - it tells you very clearly what the permissions are ahead of time, so you can be aware <print or web> it matters to you, and your wallet. It's a time saver and a mind opener, but always check the licensing. Sometimes, stock photos rock!

Hello, you can look for archive images from another photographer who has been in the field before, not necessarily the usual stock photos from an image bank. However, I doubt very much that the photographer did not deliver the work on time, we are serious people.

I believe that when push comes to shove one has to make the best of what they can. In which if I have to, I would turn to archive photography and sites like Unsplash, Pexels, Pikabay, amongst many others. I have often times had to purchase stock images when I needed quality and specific resources. It is essential for fluid project management to have these resources at hand in cases of need, and to know how to ethically use them. Licensing is something that affects the authors, so being careful to read their terms of use and contact them if needed when in doubt, is the best course of action. Some artists don't require for you to credit them, but I believe it is of utmost importance, and respect to the artist, to always do so.

In my line of work sourcing user generated content can be crucial to reporting on current affairs. However it does come with its pitfalls as people can post images and videos and claim it to be from e.g a conflict when it is actually it is from a completely different event. Taking the images and screenshots of videos and reverse image searching them has helped me verify where contact has been taken. Another helpful way of determining authenticity is by searching up road, shop and hotel names etc to see if they are near where you know or expect them to happen.

Sometimes I can not source all the images via agencies that would be ideal to report on current affairs. This could be down to them not being appropriate for breakfast television, the cost of content being out of budget or the perfect image for screens in the studio or broadcast simply not being available. To overcome this stock images or UGC (with permission) will be my backup, failing that the narrative will have to be adjusted to focus less on the part which is missing and move on to other key information which does have visuals to represent it. Images from previous dates can be used on occasion as a backup so long as it is made clear to our viewers with tags in the top corner.

Photography with text or audio can become saturated quite quickly whereas a visualisation of information in a static or moving graphic can have a greater impact. Graphics can simplify difficult information even for those who have a deeper understanding on a topic than others. Examples of where graphics have been favoured in my line of work over images include reporting on inflation increases and the cost of living as well as to explain current situations in areas of conflict.

In my experience, a clear, detailed and concise breefing is essential for a good production. It is also very important to have a timetable with deadlines, with time to be able to deal with unforeseen events.
