A while ago, I led a project in order to implement a new workflow system. On paper, it was looking perfect. But as soon as we rolled it out, progress stalled and team started to hesitate. I paused and had informal chats with everyone. Although, they supported the change, but they felt disconnected from the process and were having fear of failure. This taught me that before driving a change, it's crucial to understand where your team stands. Listening to their concerns and involving them in decisions can make a lot of difference.

One thing I think is essential for goal-setting is to understand and align with the Mission, or the ultimate goal. I think that starting the process by knowing where (we are going) and why (this is important) makes goal setting much more fulfilling.

SMART goals are usually not very inspiring as innovative goals. Stretching for innovation often means considering goals that don't yet seem achievable, can seem unquantifiable and sometimes start with a loosely defined time bound. For innovation, try DUMB goals: Dream-Driven, Uplifting, Meaningful, and Beneficial to Others. Then use SMART goals for milestones, pushing the limits of 'achievable' with each one.

Secondly, even in this stage, for each of the goal set the following: - responsible (sub)team - deadline - way of measuring the achievement (improvement) - who is going to evaluat the achievement/improvement (to avoid bias) - corrective measures in case it simply did not work out the first time

Here, personal feelings, bias, fear or favoritism have no place. Whenever an unpleasant comment/remark comes, welcome it as an opportunity to demonstrate to everybody that the above mentioned rules really do apply.

It is necessary to understand the dynamics of work and provide the team with diversity in objectives. However, we must be careful when identifying the limitations of each person for a given role. We cannot be negligent in not studying the profiles and being assertive about roles and participation. Showing diversity includes having dissent and awareness.

When assigning the responsible (sub)teams for each defined goal, take the skills, background, knowledge, know-how, competencies etc. of the members of such a (sub)team into accound. Be innovative and courrages - simetimes assignments which make the responsible person a square peg in a round hole may, in the end, turn out to bring an unprecedented positive results.

Yet, do not overwhelm your team with all the whistles and bells where half of the functionality provided by such a software tool remains never ever used since people simply just do not need that. Above all, do not press pepople to use the supportive tools in the way which is in line with your expectation of using it to the maximum, as long as the value-added work flows smootly.

It's very much about the human factor and the understanding of GMP. My thoughts to what is said so far: - When routine sets in, employees can become comfortable and no longer open to change, even though GMP requires continuous improvement. - If not all ideas from employees are implemented (which can be understandable in a GMP environment), frustration can set in over time. Sometimes ideas are actual shortcuts, which is not possible in a compliance environment as they do not necessarily improve quality

We should recognize teams achievements in both small and large wins to motivate and reinforce the importance of collaboration and innovation. Later create a system for gathering feedback on what’s working and what’s not will allow for continuous improvement.
