The old adage don’t put all your eggs in one basket has been found full of wisdom time after time. The potential delay should be planned and executed like a fire drill before it takes place.

Additional stock is to be always be kept for such suppliers in critical zones. While keeping such stocks, supplier may be kept in dark. However, ensure actions to prevent redundancy. Also, such stock to be gradually reduced by parallel debottleneck with other alternatives .

Assessing the risk is an art. You can never assess a smooth sea suddenly turn to be cyclone. Risk to also include the supplier the way they managing disruptions. For example, when financial crisis or fire accident or labour disruption , assess the capabilities of the management. Are they resourceful, EQ to handle, strong union support etc.
