Providing a safe space can be as simple as "anything said in this room will not go further" or "you can vent as much as you want for the next few minutes, but we then need to get back on track again". Give time: by nature, people are likely flustered or stressed in these organisations, and not many will be able to be eloquent or coherent in such a situation. Ensure each individual is given the time to put their thoughts together before responding, or re-phrasing their response, if needed, so that you understand clearly what the issues might be, and to help you find a resolution.

3 Seek solutions and compromises

Once you have identified and communicated the source of conflict, you can work together to find solutions and compromises that satisfy everyone's needs and goals. Try to brainstorm multiple options and evaluate them based on their pros and cons. Be open-minded and flexible, and be willing to give and take. One of the best tools I have used in situations like this is to use an anonymous system to collect feedback. This feedback can not only give you insight as to what might be going on but also allow you to create talking and teaching points. You can use an old-fashioned drop box or any number of digital whiteboards. I have also made wide use of closed door retrospectives, where we enact Vegas rules, and ask folks to respectfully, but openly discuss issues that are impacting them or the team. We also ask for folks to not only state their issue but a solution. As a group, we try to find the best path forward.
