Your employee is not following safety guidelines. What steps do you take to avoid conflict?

1. Start by having a private conversation with the employee. Approach the discussion with a calm and non-confrontational demeanor. 2. Clearly communicate the safety guidelines and explain why they are important. Emphasize the potential risks and the impact on the individual and the team. 3. Listen to the employee's perspective and try to understand their reasons for not following the guidelines. This can help you identify any underlying issues or concerns. 4. Offer support and provide any necessary training or resources to help the employee comply with the guidelines. 5. Set clear expectations and establish a plan for improvement. Agree on specific actions and a timeline for implementation.

First and foremost addressing safety requires exquisite balance in the positive work environment and ensuring the compliance is met at all levels. To understand the concern, one on one approach will help in discussing the concern of violation rather discussing in public which affects employee mental state of embarrassment and defensiveness. Being heard will make us to understand from employee's perspective to understand any lack of training knowledge that can be addressed to bridge the gap. Also, emphasizing the importance of safety guidelines to prevent any accidents or injuries for one's well being and also for the others in organization.

We can create the HSE culture in the organisation by Being positive , Recognising personality clashes, Communicating respectfully, Preventing emotional manipulation, Knowing what is important, Identifying sources of conflicts,, Acting faster, Avoid carrying your personal problems. Drive some initiative like we are doing - recognize the Safety Wellbeing champion at project and department level, HSE drive to get more reasons to ensure by asking the "GOING HOME SAFE and WELL - reminds us daily that we have a home return to at the end of the day, and what we need to keep ourselves and our colleagues safe and well to do so.

1st thing 1st, set a HSE KPI for annual appraisal with a reasonable consideration, rest all to follow that... MSA as a mandatory part of each individual on consistent frequency... DORs to be established prioritising the HSE factor.. Beyond the zero incidents regime to be introduced... Carrot and stick regime to be introduced... HSE Area Champions may be assigned...

All my experience has been in the manufacturing industry which requires strict compliance to safety guidelines. Having led the safety team, the reaction and response of employees is fathomable. We adopted the following steps to ensure adherence 1. Initiated weekly sessions of safety trainings & the importance 2. Daily inspections & monitoring by the safety officer and the non compliance recorded and reported 3. Non adherence noted was empathetically dealt privately with the employee & explained the consequences. Demonstration with videos of possible accidents 4. Continuous monitoring 5. Maximum of three warnings issued of which third would be with penalties or suspension 6. Report to management for action, in case of further non adherence

In my experience, a calm and non-confrontational private discussion with employee is proven to be effective. Talk about the risks involved, both to the individual and the organization, and the potential legal and financial ramifications. Make sure they understand that their actions could impact not only their own safety but also that of their colleagues. Emphasize the impact of safety violations on their well-being and the importance of following protocols.

To ensure the communication at all levels and all our colleagues across the world should be aware of – and engaged, message and reflecting action by the top management as a part of induction, e-learning modules, mandatory trainings to qualify the probation, performance goals and various drive of communication by the LM/SLT etc help in implementation and making habit like "Safety first should be the second nature of individual on personal and professional world.

Schedule a meeting with the employee understand the reason for not following safety rules and explain him as to what will happen if he or she is non compliant , even after this same thing is repeated then issue a warning mail

Clarify Expectations, Reinforce the importance of safety guidelines and clarify the specific expectations for compliance. Make sure the employee understands the potential consequences of not following these guidelines, both for their own safety and for the well-being of their colleagues.

Constructive criticism. Instruct to educate or inform the employee of appropriate safety performance and behaviour. Do evaluation in a period to update the performance.

Acknowledge the employee's perspective and appreciate their cooperation and commitment to improvement. Encourage their input and suggestions on resolving the problem while offering support and guidance. Together, agree on a detailed action plan outlining steps, responsibilities, resources, and deadlines for implementing the solution. Document the agreement and follow up on progress to ensure accountability and track resolution efforts. This collaborative approach fosters ownership and commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.

Keep a risk register where potential risk will be recorded and regularly updated. Also it needs to be accessible by all to check the contents to keep everyone aware.

Health and Safety systems are like any other systems of work in a company in that they should be open to continuous improvement. Reviewing the safety program regularly is important to ensure it continues to be relevant. Part of maintaining relevance is ensuring training is maintained. Establishing and ensuring there is a system in place to record that employees have received safety training or required refresher training goes a long way to keeping employees safe. As work changes and new tasks are introduced the H&S team must be part of the process to ensure employees are safe to do the work. For example there is a new task that requires working at heights and employees require fall protection training and equipment to be able to work safely

Implement measures to prevent similar safety issues from arising in the future. This may include additional training or refresher courses on safety procedures, establishing clearer communication channels for reporting safety concerns, or adjusting work processes to mitigate risks.

Regularly review and evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented solutions. Monitor the employee's adherence to safety guidelines and address any recurring issues promptly. Continuously seek feedback from employees and update safety protocols as needed to ensure ongoing improvement.

Safety or a larger terms EHS is part of the cultural aspect of any organisation. You can push or punish and ask someone to follow the safety norms by rules and procedures. However, if you have a safety culture built through the partnership of employees would help each employee to be an ambassador for the safety cause. My experience is it's a good way to engage employees through breaking down safety aspects in an action plan and asking a different cross-functional team to lead those action plans would help employees relate to the safety culture of the organisation and also give chance to build cross-functional teams for larger organisation interests.

When addressing a situation where an employee is not adhering to safety guidelines, it's crucial to begin by delving into the 'why' behind their actions. Privately meeting with the team member allows for a constructive dialogue to unfold, aiming to uncover any underlying issues or potential flaws in the current processes. This approach not only fosters understanding but also provides an opportunity for the employee to contribute ideas for improvement. By involving them in the solution and acknowledging their input, it not only resolves the immediate concern but also cultivates a culture of collaboration and ownership within the team.

Speed is the essence here! With a safety issue the employee cannot continue to work unless safe! This also shows the importance to the employee that you care for their welfare.

En el mejor de los casos, es que un colaborador no haya seguido las normas y no haya pasado nada y las recomendaciones que se dan en el artículo son correctas; el problema es mayor cuando por causas de no seguir las normas se tenga un accidente que vaya desde una afectación a su integridad de él, de cercanos o terceros no involucrados, hasta problemas mayores que implican perdidas de vidas e impactos económicos mayores en la organización. Por ello, ninguna norma de seguridad debe evitarse, omitirse, seguir de forma distinta, etc. Es de gran importancia tener detectados los actos inseguros, como las condiciones inseguras que puedan da?ar a cualquier persona, seguimientos claros por parte de comisiones mixtas etc y no minimizar nada.

I engage the employee in a discussion about the case and let him/her know the benefits of following safety guidelines and the dangers of not following them. I document and warn the employee as he's now informed about it and aware of the effects.
