Can't agree more on the fact it is not only stopping the immediate leak but ensuring every steps to prevent recurrence. In some cases this step becomes the 1st step before even you embark on assessing the impact. As part of preventing recurrence we must reassess all controls, environments, interdependencies and resources without confined to identied vulnerabilities only. Root cause analysis would surface more and unidentified issues which we never thought that it would be relevant to the specific breach situation. In parallel to containment process communications with all stakeholders on the progress is essential within the limits of confidentiality. This will help managing customers and internal panic situations as well.

In the wake of a data ownership breach, I would undertake an incisive review of our data governance and security architecture. A pertinent example is the 2017 Equifax incident, where inadequate encryption and lax controls resulted in the exposure of 147 million users' data. Post-breach, Equifax instituted rigorous encryption standards, multifactor authentication, and continuous monitoring—transforming their security posture. Analogously, I would implement a layered security framework, emphasizing zero-trust principles, real-time threat intelligence, and stringent audit mechanisms, thereby fortifying our defenses and re-establishing stakeholder confidence.

Most often after math of a data breach professionals busy implementing or strengthening technical controls but we should never underestimate the need of strengthening policies, procedures, protocols, processes and people. Pillars of information security is People, Processes and Technologies. Without strenthning Processes and then people through trainings and awareness Technological Enhancement alone wouldn't prevent recurrence. Ideally with technical enhancements or changes to technical controls full review of policies, procedures, processes and retraining of people would be best course of actions.

Have a action/reaction plan in place. Do not wait for such breaches to learn from them. Be aware of your data classifications and impact plus action if breached. Communicate clearly to impacted parties on what has happened and what that should do- for example:reset password, inform banks, so on.

In facts these can also be used as proactive controls through ongoing monitoring, identifying anomalies, investigating, identifying potential impacts, and assessing impact would prevent data breaches. Entities should never be reluctant to invest on necessary technologies and required resources to perform ongoing monitoring of their environment including user activities, system events, Internet data fluctuations, end-points, etc.
