The next day was our Service Engineers meet and every one had to be given a Service Engineer's Hand book which we used to call it as our bible, this was in late 1980's in Maruti. even though the responsibility of getting this ready was with a particular section of the department, to meet the dead line and have the hand books ready, we pulled in all the resources from the entire department and worked the entire night to complete the hand book which was 250+ pages everything was done manually in those days. While that might be fine for commodity , interchangeable components, a company should understand what is a core competency (and usually complex and risky), adjacent ( things that impact the core), and commodity. Most sourcing should be things that are commodity or adjacent, and while alternate supplier are fine in the commodity area, and at time in the adjacent area, things that are core should be developed under tight control, and with suppliers who become strategic partners over time (and sometimes acquisition targets). A supplier management process that makes these strategic decisions is critical.
