Admittedly, SIM vs SEM difference last mattered around 2005 or so, but the two elements of the modern SIEM can be seen in the dual mission of SIEM today: near real time threat detection and historical analysis, reporting and investigation support.

Legacy #siem is dead. The intended functionality of a #siem lives on in new unified threat search platforms, doing its work across re engineered #datapipelines and hybrid / multiple log repositories based on forensic and retention requirements! Long live SIEM functionality with updated platforms, data sets and modern efficiencies.

A mature SIEM program is so much more than a just a security solution. It can be a very powerful business tool as well. Yes, you can use it for alerting and forensics but it can also be useful for providing the business with important data flow information.

Often the issue is when teams look at the events/information from different tools in their respective consoles, thus consuming information in isloation. SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) helps by pulling logs from all these different sources in a central location for monitoring and corelation. Ex: You get alert for multiple login failure from your AD and from a seperate system you get event for a update query being run on your DB. In isolation one overlooks these logs, but when you corelate the sequence of event you get more intel. Common issue is companies using SIEM only to collect logs and dashboard and not for alerting based on their corelation. Corelation use cases should be start of SIEM and security tool journey

The name says it all, a Security Incident and Event Management is something that could be used to collate the logs from various servers and services to identify potential attacks and track where they originated from. Having a SIEM implemented alone will not reduce the risk to an organization. It is only good as the data it receives. Because of that, it is very important to have the data sources clearly identified, fed in to SIEM and triggers configured appropriately. It is also important to remember that when done wrong, SIEM could be utilized by an attacker to get a better understanding of the infrastructure of the organization. So make sure the access to SIEM is adequately controlled and monitored.

This description is actually not bad. I think what the SIEM vendors are trying to do is apply the People, Process, Technology principles to solving the SOC headaches. So have a tool that powers the SOC workflow (which is the threat detection, investigation and response process) using as few people as possible. Meaning, as easy to use and automated as possible. Spoiler alert -- Automatic SIEMs or SIEMs that work out of the box do not exist, and will likely never exist or may exist in the distant future.

A Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) plays a crucial role in security by offering effective log management, correlation, and mapping threat intelligence. It is extensively utilized in conjunction with security frameworks to proactively identify and analyze threats, as well as to conduct forensics for tracing the chain of custody in events. SIEM serves as an integral component of organizational security, aligning with various roles.

The SIEM solution can mainly help in maturing the Cyber Security Incident Management process in two layers: -Proactive: When providing alerts about suspicious attack attempts; based on the configured use cases or the Threat Intelligence feeds. -Reactive: When investigating incidents, by running queries to track the history of specific activities related to certain network traffic; for example, in order to get more details and reach the conclusion that helps in closing the cycle. This is based on previously having an integration with several systems and network devices in the environment. For both approaches, dashboards and reports can be generated.

In today's context, many organizations deploy SIEM primarily to meet compliance requirements and check the compliance box. However, SIEM goes beyond compliance, providing centralized security visibility for incident response. It serves as both a proactive and reactive measure to minimize business downtime. Additionally, SIEM plays a crucial role in threat detection, threat hunting, and leveraging threat intelligence to stay ahead in protecting the organization.

An SIEM tool can also help with forensic investigation if there has been an incident by identifying the root cause of the incident. The tool can give out detailed audit trails and logs leading up to the incident, and help assess the impact on organization's security posture.

Choosing a SIEM service involves: 1.Security Needs: Identify threats and data requirements. 2.Red Teaming & MITRE: Choose a SIEM that aligns with red teaming using MITRE ATT&CK framework. 3.Cost-Benefit: Assess SIEM’s cost against features and long-term expenses. 4.Technical Fit: Check SIEM’s compatibility with your storage, processing needs, and current systems. 5.Scalability: Ensure the SIEM can adapt to network changes or growth. 6.Vendor Reputation: Research the vendor’s market presence, support quality and licensing. 7.Compliance: Verify industry standard compliance and reporting capabilities. 8.User Interface: Look for ease of use and customization. 9.Pilot Test: Conduct a trial to evaluate effectiveness in your environment.

Understand that SIEM is only one part of the security operations technology stack. With the advancement of endpoint detection (& now XDR) we have technologies that are not reliant on SIEM to analyze activity and take action. This means when looking at a service provider it's important to understand your requirements. Do you need them to just manage your SIEM or are they going to be your Security Operations Center (SOC). If they are providing your SOC then there are additional technologies you may need to consider, or you'll need to look into how you integrate them with the SIEM and the benefit v risk of doing so. Also consider what you do with your SIEM or what the benefits/outcomes you need are. Focus on those don't get distracted.

The guiding principle here is to apply an outcome-based approach and a use case first approach to selecting a SIEM. First understand what outcomes you are looking for and the use cases that are important to you. For example insider threat, or data exfiltration, or lateral movement, or ransomware. Notice how some of these use cases are "broader" and "grosser" than others. Then understand what data sources you will need to deliver on these use cases. Select a SIEM that will be able to 1) collect and analyze these data sources, 2) deliver good analytics with a good signal/noise ratio, a low level of false positive and high rate of true positives. A good SIEM should automate as much as possible, and store data as cheaply as possible.

Deciding up front what threats you want to detect? Seriously? This is only possible to some degree, based on your network and cloud infrastructure, insight on what information assets your organisation holds and based on a proper risk management strategy including full insight in the effectiveness of your current security controls. Also make sure that the tooling can detect more then your basic list now, threat landscapes change and limiting what a tool can detect based on your current threat profile is dangerous.

The best deployment approach is one of iterative, phased deployment. Again think in terms of "use cases" and in terms of enabling or "switching on" use cases. Methodically and intentionally get the first batch of use cases online, test, validate, and then add more use cases etc. The phases approach should have an ROI principle. What are the low hanging fruit use cases, the ones that don't require much data, don't require complex and expensive compute yet offer a good use case coverage. Identity-based use cases come to mind here. Then progressively add more complex use cases, i.e., need more data and more complex analytics.

Apart from these mentioned points, we can utilize the features of modern SIEMs such as automation, playbooks, tasks, TI, UEBA, and hunting capabilities etc., when configuring new detection rules, monitoring and continuous improvement phases for improving overall operational efficiency.

To effectively implement and use SIEM, start by defining your security needs to select the appropriate system. Integrate SIEM with your existing security infrastructure to gather comprehensive data. Configure it to identify and prioritize threats specific to your environment. Train your security team on SIEM tools for effective monitoring and response. Regularly update configurations to stay ahead of new threats and evolving business requirements. Utilize SIEM insights for continuous security improvement, adjusting strategies and defences based on real-time data analysis.

Before start the SIEM implementation you should consider: - define clear objectives and Goals including what you want to monitor, how you want to monitor it, and what kind of alerts you want to receive. This will help ensure that your SIEM implementation is aligned with your business needs -having a centralised location for all data that will be collected. This will help to identify patterns and anomalies in your data more efficiently. Ensuring that all relevant data sources are integrated into your SIEM platform is vital.

With SIEM, event log data from various sources is collected and analyzed in real time to identify deviations from the norm, and appropriate action is taken.

SIEM's not a silver bullet. Although SIEMs are security rockstars, let's be real. They generate false alarms like crazy, require cybersecurity ninjas to set up, and drown in data overload. Integrating them with our security zoo is a nightmare, and they only see part of the threat landscape. They fight threats, but: 1. False alarms drain time, real threats hide in the noise. 2. Setting them up requires security experts, not amateurs. 3. Data deluge swamps you, insights get lost in the flood. 4. Integrating them feels like wrangling cats. They miss blind spots too. Combine them with the right people, processes, and awareness to build an impregnable security fortress.

SIEM is constantly evolving, to include capabilities of EDR and expand to XDR. Practitioners started to make its full use thru the use of AI in detecting more and more as well as sophisticated threats. Rules in the SIEM should be tested and regularly calibrated. It should be well integrated in within your cloud or hybrid network and notable alerts must be part of the discussion with technology and risk teams and recommend actions to control to maximize its full potentiial.

If the goal is protection, SIEM should definitely not be the preferred solution. AV, IPS, to name a few, work best at this layer. However, if you are looking for detection (in particular aggregating logs from different sources and complex scenarios), there is still nothing like SIEM.
