How can I help you? That's it. Offer assistance. Don't ask if they need or want assistant. Just offer it. Don't offer advice. Don't do the "this is how I would handle it ..." thing. Just tell them to tell you how to help.

To support my colleague who is feeling overwhelmed, I can start by checking in with them and expressing my understanding of their workload. I might suggest we tackle some tasks together or ask if I can take on a few smaller ones (so they don’t feel incompetent) to lighten their load. By being open and respectful, I can show my willingness to help without overstepping their boundaries.

In my experience the first thing to do to offer support without stepping on someones toes is being clear with ourselves we really want to be of help and support. Empathy should be guiding us so we can allow people to acknowledge they need the support. We also need to be clear on our boundaries and recognize other people's boundaries to avoid stepping on them. And always work on creating environments that invite honest conversations and where people feel safe and can ask for help when they need it.

To offer support without overstepping: Ask Openly: Gently ask if they need help and how you can assist, giving them control over what they delegate. Offer Specific Help: Suggest concrete tasks you can take on, making it easier for them to accept help. Respect Boundaries: Be mindful of their preferences and avoid taking over unless they ask for it. Check In Regularly: Offer continued support without being pushy, ensuring they feel comfortable reaching out when needed. This approach shows respect for their workload while providing meaningful help.
