When coachees have conflicting goals, it’s essential to create a structured space for open dialogue. Start by exploring each person's goals individually, helping them clarify priorities and underlying motivations. Then, facilitate a collaborative discussion to identify any common ground or shared objectives that could align their efforts. Encourage each coachee to listen to and empathize with others’ perspectives, fostering mutual understanding and respect. As the coach, guide them in developing actionable steps that respect each goal while finding a balanced approach. Regularly check in to ensure the agreed-upon strategies are working, adjusting as needed to maintain harmony and progress.

This is perfectly fine. In fact, I have run cohorts over 12 weeks based in achievement and a number of other concepts and everyone has their own goal. The difference is that I have developed a process that works to achieve the goal. So it doesn’t matter if they have different goals. In fact, I encourage it. What matters is following the process that has a high consistent yield overtime. I realize this may be a different way of looking at it.

Begin by facilitating a discussion where each coachee can express their goals and reasons. Encourage empathy by having coachees explore each other’s perspectives, which can lead to a deeper mutual understanding and respect for diverse objectives. In the next step, collaboratively work towards integrating their goals or finding a compromise that respects each party’s priorities while advancing collective objectives. If direct alignment isn’t feasible, help them prioritise or sequence their goals to reduce conflict.

"You can have anything you want, but not everything you want". What is so hard for high-potential individuals is deciding what it is they actually want when there are so many paths available to them. The starting point has to be an exercise to help coachees discover their own personal values, and typically what is the 'north-star' value above all else. From there, rooted in these values, we can then create a vision for the future that they are truly excited about. The last part then becomes simple - taking each of the priorities, how do they each contribute to the future vision? Often I find that some immediately fall away, whilst one or two are very clearly the areas for immediate focus.
