In my experience it is critical to assess your requirements specifically the maturity of your business architecture, what the target state is, and what other architecture domains are leveraging if you are following an enterprise architecture model. Archimate is a modeling language for enterprise architecture that helps to describe, analyze, and visualize the relationships among business domains. It consists of three layers: business, application, and technology, and defines a core set of concepts and views for each layer. Many tools support Archimate, but some of them are expensive or complex. Two free and simple options are Archi and Draw.IO. Archi is the most popular ArchiMate modeling tool. Draw.IO is a browser-based diagramming tool that supports Archimate notation as well as other formats. Both tools are easy to use and compatible with the Archimate standard.

In 1982, when I started working for Information Engineering (Australia), my employers were unable to find any tool to help them implement the Information Engineering (IE) approach. After a major upheaval in the company, I had to not only revamp a good deal of the IE methodology but also wrote their software product called USER:Data.
