To provide a top-notch network security we need to focus on both architecture design and monitoring. For a robust network architecture, we need to use advance security technologies like NGFWs, IDS, EDR, LB, Vulnerability Detector, Network Segmentation etc. Then we need to build a monitoring process that will monitor the vulnerabilities on the network and find possible attack path to the vulnerabilities. We need to fix this attack path quickly and secure the perimeter of the network. Apart from this, we need to perform regular audits to find out week configurations on the network devices. Finally, most important point is user awareness and training to avoid attacks through fishing and spams.

Layered defense helps in making the network security more rigid. I have observed that multiple layers of security means multiple layers to penetrate as well. For example I know few organizations which were not affected by crowd strike. One of the main reasons for this is having their own defense mechanism on top of Microsoft’s security.

Using multiple vendor technologies for a layered network security can lead to compatibility issues, increased complexity, and limited visibility across your organisation’s network. Managing different tools from various vendors requires more expertise, raises costs, and complicates incident response. Also, reliance on multiple vendors can increase the risk of vendor lock-in and supply chain vulnerabilities, while making it harder to maintain compliance and perform effective audits. Although a multi-vendor approach offers diverse security capabilities, organizations must carefully manage these challenges to ensure a consistent, easy-to-understand and effective security strategy.

Here's a comprehensive plan: 1. *Segmentation*: Divide the network into isolated zones, each with its own access controls, to minimize lateral movement in case of a breach.

In my professional practice, integrating hardware and software security measures, such as firewalls and intrusion detection systems (IDS), helps prevent bottlenecks and maintain performance. Continuous log monitoring enables real-time threat detection and response, providing clear insight into network activities. Additionally, automating processes reduces false positives and speeds up threat handling, ensuring that the network remains secure and efficient.

When choosing a network architecture, organization may consider these designs: Two-Tier Architecture offers simplicity and reduced latency, ideal for less complex apps. Three-Tier Architecture enhances security and scalability, suitable for complex apps. Microservices Architecture allows for independent scaling and flexibility, best for large-scale applications. Service-Oriented Architecture promotes interoperability and modularity, suitable for enterprise environments. Cloud-Native Architecture leverages cloud benefits like elasticity, ideal for cloud-first strategies. Edge Computing reduces latency for real-time processing needs. Adopting a Zero Trust Model, implementing redundancy, automation, and focusing on security by design.

Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs)*: Deploy NGFWs that integrate intrusion prevention, antivirus, and sandboxing capabilities to inspect traffic and block threats.

For such an implementation, I would like to implement first thing will be NGFW. Then I will implement ZTNA. If it is little big client then SIEM also can be implemented. For backup DR need to implemented specially for cloud applications. Lastly good network monitoring tools and automatic firmware with patch upgrade need to be implemented. For engineers we need to enhance the knowledge sharing process and keep discussing best practices.

Segment your network into separate logical zones using firewalls: This helps limit the spread of threats. By doing so, you can apply specific security policies to each zone as needed without affecting overall network traffic. Move toward a more distributed security architecture: Enable detection and policy enforcement across all network elements. This approach prevents overburdening central points and allows for faster responses to threats. Implement end-to-end encryption: Even if intercepted, this ensures data confidentiality during transit without impacting network performance.

A smart network design is crucial for maintaining performance while securing your client's infrastructure. By segmenting the network into distinct zones, you can enforce security policies more effectively and isolate sensitive data. Using Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) helps control traffic flow and limits access to critical resources. Properly configured, VLANs can reduce unnecessary data transmission, ensuring smoother operation. Additionally, it's important to keep hardware components up to date and ensure they can handle the latest security protocols without slowing down the network.

Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS)*: Implement IDPS to identify and prevent intrusion attempts, with advanced analytics and machine learning capabilities.

When implementing a layered security design, choosing an efficient and secure protocol for communication channels is critical. The selection of secure protocols should depend on the specific applications and requirements of the organization. Secure protocols like TLS, SCP, SFTP, HTTPS, and IPsec frameworks offer robust security features. These protocols ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of data. Combining encryption protocols such as Authentication Header (AH), SHA-256, and AES provides additional security layers. By considering these protocols and their performance in handling data traffic, organizations can enforce secure communication practices that align with their security objectives.

To deliver top-notch service while enhancing network security without impacting performance, I would implement a layered defense strategy, combining firewalls, IDPS, anti-malware, and network segmentation. To maintain performance, I’d use load balancing, QoS settings, and regular monitoring. Additionally, I’d ensure continuous improvement through security audits, employee training, and a robust incident response plan. This approach secures the network effectively while ensuring optimal performance.

Regular audits are ofcourse necessary to identify the vulnerability in the environment. Security audits, governance audits, VA audits etc are all crucial. Regular VA assessment on servers , security tools , applications, DB make us prepared in advance for any major incidents. Getting the compliant software installed on user machines, servers and monitoring them with any un noticed behaviour if any is crucial and thus plays important aspect on making the environment compliant with regulations circulated.

Regular network audits are important to find any vulnerabilities caused by misconfigurations or specific firmware issues. Fixing these problems quickly is crucial to maintaining strong security and preventing potential breaches. Audits provide insights into network use, which helps in planning and resource allocation. Checking the network regularly, organizations can improve security, make operations more efficient, and ensure business continuity.

Encryption*: Encrypt data in transit using Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols, and encrypt data at rest using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

In my 10 years of network infrastructure management, having the right tech support/ monitoring team, well defined escalation matrix, a win-win SLA contract between the client and service provider, daily performance reporting and tracking will give a competitive advantage for a top quality network service delivery.

Educate users security basics like spotting phishing scams and using strong passwords. Keeping users informed is key to stopping security breaches. Regular training helps all employees know how to keep the network secure. We should use a strong learning management system (LMS) for this training. Rewarding users when they complete training can also keep them motivated and engaged.

In my experience as a SOC analyst, proactive log monitoring is crucial for detecting and addressing threats in real time, providing clear visibility into network activities. Use tools for sharing Indicators of Compromise (IoCs) with partner organizations, such as MISP, to enhance threat intelligence and collaboration. Additionally, automating processes helps reduce false positives, handle threats swiftly, and avoid blocking legitimate connections, thereby maintaining both security and performance.

As I have observed, human error is behind most security threats. Regular training and awareness campaigns are crucial for preventing these issues. By educating users to recognize phishing attempts, such as fake emails and misleading websites, as well as other attacks like social engineering and malware, organizations can lower the chances of security breaches. Ongoing training helps users learn best practices, spot potential threats, and respond correctly, improving the overall security of the organization.

To maintain a secure and high-performing network, it’s essential to educate users regularly. Human error is often the weakest link in security, so conducting training sessions on best practices—like recognizing phishing attempts and using strong passwords—can make a big difference. By fostering a security-conscious culture, where users are aware of their role in protecting the network, you can significantly reduce the risk of security breaches without negatively impacting performance.

I think training users is not enough, but also we should do some fishing campaigns for all users, like sending fraud mails…etc and then monitor user interactions, and based on the training we can figure out who take it seriously and who didn’t. Applying a kind of punishment will be also helpful, like you have a limit of 5 campaigns to fail else you will be more restricted. Actually in my opinion user behavior is more dangerous than the attack itself, if this attack requires user interaction but user has enough knowledge to take right decisions you will be more safe. In general we should provide training and a practical procedures to test user behavior.

*Secure Access Control*: Implement multi-factor authentication, role-based access control, and least privilege access to ensure only authorized users access network resources.
