The 1st step to support a client in leadership development is diagnose.1-on-1 discovery session with 'why-why analysis' as focus throws up useful insights.We can compliment this understanding by use of tools like 360 degree questionnaire administered on the stakeholders of the client,valid psychometric tools etc. Armed with these data-points,we can co-create individual development plan (IDP) together with the client. Use IDP to help the client leverage his strengths more and craft development inputs on areas for improvement.These should have an effective mix of coaching sessions to cause mindset shifts,on-job/cross-functional exp.For skill-building and courses to enhance knowledge. Review progress periodically and re-focus as required.

Any development first begins with awareness, both of ourselves and the impact we have on others. Essentially leadership is about influencing another person towards an action in line with your business goals. The most effective influence is when the other person can sense your genuine concern for their well-bring. Otherwise, the relationship is reduced to a transactional one, which may reap something in the short-term, but will erode trust in the long term.

Help the client define what role the client wants the leaders to play. As per that, use diagnostic and assessment tools to assess the competency gaps. Most times, leaders are well aware of what they need to do to enhance their performance and skills, yet they hesitate or procrastinate due to limiting beliefs. Before initiating coaching, I prioritize taking inventory of all potential limiting beliefs that may cause a leader to stagnate or hesitate, enabling us to clear those roadblocks right from the start. When the coach and client tackle the most challenging issues first, I've observed that the transformation is significantly accelerated, and the return on investment for the client can be tenfold. I often say, "the deeper we dive, the greater the outcome." This principle applies equally to teams and individual leaders.

Applying an existing leadership model or framework can often result in restricting the individual in terms of their potential. Challenging the client to introspect and ask themselves difficult questions, is important to push the boundaries. We are mindful of our strengths and also our development areas, usually. But we don't know what to do with them. That's where we need to step in and coach our clients. They have the knowledge to be the best leaders within themselves already- but are they the best leaders in the context of their organizations? If not, how do they become one and align with the organization's vision without losing their own style of leading - that's the balance to achieve.

Breaking down these daunting goals into manageable, repeatable steps and addressing them one at a time significantly boosts a leader's confidence in their capacity to tackle "scary" challenges and ultimately reinforces their trust in their own ability to learn and grow.
