Perhaps they can find a little recognition for themselves? Start with 3 skills and strengths or recent successes or wins to note down and remind yourself that, even without external validation, you still offer things of value and do a good job. Go further and make it part of a daily routine- to list 3-5 skills or strengths to celebrate daily and draw upon when motivation is low. Call them “love letters to yourself”, put the in a “brag book”, make a success board, whatever works for you. And never let the lack of external validation be a reason not to celebrate yourself

Recognition is about validating individual’s contributions in a way that resonates with their personal & professional values. To help a client regain motivation from burnout due to lack of recognition, start by understanding their preferred recognition style, public, private, or otherwise.Recognition should be genuine & tied to personal growth, fostering a sense of progression. Encourage them to contribute to a culture of peer recognition to boost morale. Promote self-recognition to help them acknowledge their own achievements & avoid over-reliance on external validation.Lastly, emphasize self-care to ensure sustained motivation & energy. Authentic, personalized recognition can help them feel seen, valued & energized for long-term success.

The foundation of any successful business is its clients. It's essential to prioritize their emotions and well-being. Understanding their needs and supporting their personal growth is key to fulfilling the reason they chose to work with you in the first place. We must keep them informed about every milestone, no matter how small, to show that progress is being made. This not only keeps clients reassured but also makes them feel valued. When clients feel included, they’re more likely to communicate openly and stay motivated, knowing they’re an important part of the organization. Maintaining communication at both a personal and professional level is crucial for fostering trust and long-term relationships.

When a client is feeling burned out from a lack of recognition, I start by acknowledging their frustration and validating their feelings. As a career strategist, I remind them that their value isn’t solely determined by external validation. Together, we shift focus to their intrinsic motivations—what first inspired them in their role, and the personal achievements they’re proud of. I encourage them to celebrate small wins and set meaningful personal goals. Additionally, we explore ways to communicate their contributions more effectively to management, ensuring their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. Reconnecting with purpose and recognizing their own efforts can reignite their motivation.

It's crucial to shift their focus from external validation to internal fulfillment. Encourage them to reconnect with their "why"—the core reasons they chose their current path and the personal values driving their work. By identifying smaller, meaningful milestones and celebrating their own progress, they can reclaim a sense of accomplishment. At the same time, foster an environment of self-compassion, where they acknowledge their efforts without relying on others' approval. Finally, work with them to establish healthy boundaries, ensuring they prioritize self-care and engage in activities that rejuvenate their energy and creativity.
