Your client is facing rejection in their job search. How can you help them navigate this challenging process?

In my experience, there are two main reasons why candidates are regularly rejected for roles: 1. Their CV is poor. 2. They are applying for roles where they lack the right skills, experience or qualifications. In my coaching practice, this is where I start the work. Of course, there are also occasions where something else is at play, but 90% of the problems boil down to these two issues.

The coach should know the statistics regarding #attempts to a job offer for the role. Provide reality checks well before interviewing begins. Is their rejection rate in line with the market rate for this role?

Le rejet fait parti de la vie… Prendre le temps de réfléchir… Accepter le refus… Parfois on peut analyser et le comprendre parfois non mais toujours se rappeler que c’est trouvant un mal pour un bien. Il y’a une meilleure opportunité très souvent par la suite ??! Restez confiant et continuez à croire en soi!

I have found that it is critical for the job seeker to completely understand the landscape of the company that they are applying to. Simply put in many cases I have witnessed that the inside connections that many have can contribute to hiring factors and practices. Unfortunately this is not a factor that is acknowledged to the fullest. Basically this can undermine many efforts of any unconnected job seeker that is not in this loop of information. This is one factor! The resume component brings a multitude of challenges that can range from… did the interviewer review your resume prior to lunch or after, was it a Monday or Friday review practice, and was the reviewer competent in reviewing skillsets as well as transferable skills.

Honest Reflection is some area many people need to follow in a rejection season. We need to honest about who we are, whom we want to become, gaps we have and are we willing to sacrifice anything for real success

I often think about the interview conversation and think back to my responses. How did the interviewer react to my responses? Did they share any feedback in the interview that was negative or reasoning as to why I might not be a good fit for the role? In my experience, you usually know why you are not chosen for future interviews or for the role. If you think back to the conversation, there might be hints based on comments or reactions during the interview. In my experience, when I reflect on my conversation during the interview - I know what I might have said or remember what the interviewer might have told me regarding my response that might have reduced my chance of securing the role. Take the opportunity to learn and improve.

A gap analysis is a powerful tool. Write down on a piece of paper all the requirements you can find on the job description, next to it try to justify how you meet these requirements. Be fair in your judgement and assess if there are deep gaps that you need to work on, or there are parts of your resumé that you can optmize and make more tangible too.

lors d'une candidature qui n'a pas fonctionné et si l'on a pas obtenu d'explications, il s'agit de formuler un ensemble d'hypothèses: vérification des outils, cv, lettre, de son profil sur les réseaux sociaux, sa connaissance du marché , du métier, des besoins des entreprises, sa préparation aux questions lors de l'entretien. Vérifier l'adéquation entre son profil et les compétences attendues par le poste et l'entreprise, envisager un complément de formation ou une VAE. Réfléchir à ses concurrents, leur profil. Savoir se situer par rapport à ses attentes en terme de salaire et avantages sur son marché...

I would suggest to start off with reflecting on your resume and check what changes it needs. Work on defining a resume with relevant keywords, summary, experience and achievements. Quantify if possible. Be clear and concise. Use action verbs. Tailor your resume based on roles that you apply for. Check your resume for typos. Keep working on your resume and updating it from time to time.

Look, if you’re getting rejected, it could be for various reasons. Don't get discouraged—keep going! You’ll find your dream job. I am sure :) One of the biggest and most underestimated aspects when it comes to an application is the resume. Here is a simple but effective trick to get you to that first interview: Companies often use AI and algorithms to read resumes. If your resume does NOT match the job description's keywords, you might be automatically rejected by the system without a human ever seeing your potential. Use the exact keywords from the job description in your resume. Don’t copy and paste, but focus on the keywords and make them stand out by writing them in bold.

Donner une teinte personnelle à son CV me para?t être nécessaire pour permettre au recruteur de distinguer ce qui différencie ce candidat des autres. Je suis pour SURPRENDRE : avec une réalisation particulière, un bref story telling, une forme différente. Mais cela doit rester personnalisé, rester cohérent au profil de la personne.

And if they are not selected during the interview, the recruiter can get detailed feedback from the customer and help the client to improve. Along with this they can guide on how to write a resume as every region has a different perspective style of writing resumes.

Albeit thoroughly understanding the job description, conducting deep company research, and effectively showcasing your unique skills and experiences, authenticity is key to standing out in an interview. Be honest about your experiences and avoid exaggeration. Interviewers can usually tell when a candidate is not being genuine, and authenticity can build trust and rapport.

Networking can be a game-changer in your job search. For instance, one client landed a role by connecting with an industry insider who knew about a position before it was advertised. Another client gained crucial insights from attending industry events, which helped refine their job search strategy. Additionally, reconnecting with former colleagues led to a referral that significantly boosted another client's chances of securing an interview. Encourage clients to actively build their network through industry events, online forums, and alumni connections. Genuine interactions can open doors to valuable opportunities and provide critical industry insights.

Tout d'abord, il est essentiel de gérer ses émotions et ne pas se laisser submerger par le découragement. Il faut se concentrer sur les aspects positifs de son parcours. Il ne faut pas prendre personnellement ce rejet car il ne reflète pas nécessairement ses compétences ou sa valeur en tant que professionnel. Il faut l’envisager comme une opportunité d'apprentissage et de croissance. Il faut surtout rester persévérant et continuer à postuler à des emplois qui correspondent à ses compétences et à ses aspirations professionnelles. On l’oublie mais la résilience est une compétence clé dans la recherche d'emploi.

One thing I've found helpful is to tailor your approach and expectations - submit both high-touch and low-touch applications. For example: submit a standard, more generic CV without a cover letter to jobs where you meet 70% of the criteria (low touch). This can be on LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. If you are very interested in a company or position - send a tailored email with a cover letter, expressing your interest in the company, position, etc to someone on LinkedIn or in your network. This helps to manage expectations (and capacity) that you are not 100% invested in every single application. You never know what might come from a low-hanging fruit application on LinkedIn or Indeed.

During significant changes like this one I would also recommend to maintain hobbies and activities that we enjoy and we are good at, which build up our self esteem and confidence. It might seem obvious to try harder after a failure, and invest even more time in research and interviews, but inspiration and connection to self come in moments of relaxation and joy, when there is enough space to receive insights. We should make sure we continue tu build up on our resources (physical and emotional) as much as we use them to stay resilient and not give up. Otherwise depression and emotional burnout are just around the corner.

When clients face job search rejection, first acknowledge their feelings. Then, guide them to view rejection as redirection, not failure. Encourage a thorough review of their application materials and interview performance for improvement areas. Suggest seeking specific feedback from interviewers when possible. Help them refine their job search strategy – are they targeting the right roles and companies? Encourage networking to uncover hidden opportunities. Teach resilience-building techniques like positive self-talk and mindfulness. Remind them that job searching is often a numbers game. Set small, achievable goals to maintain momentum. Most importantly, help them maintain perspective – the right opportunity will come with persistence.

Handling rejection from an interview can be tough, but it’s crucial to understand that it’s not a reflection of your worth or capabilities. Often, rejection simply means that the role wasn’t the right fit, not that you aren’t qualified. Think of it as finding the right match between your skills and the job’s requirements. Just as a puzzle piece needs to fit perfectly, the role needs to align with your strengths and career goals. Keep in mind that many factors are at play, including company needs and team dynamics, which have nothing to do with your abilities. Embrace rejection as a sign that you’re one step closer to finding a position where your skills and passion align perfectly with the company’s needs.
