When supporting a client through a career crossroad, I encourage them to use mindfulness for clearer decision-making. Practising mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or journaling helps create calm and clarity. These practices allow them to distance themselves from pressures and understand what truly matters. I also encourage reflection on their values, long-term goals, and what feels right in the present moment. Recognising and celebrating achievements builds confidence, helping clients make decisions that align with both their mind and heart, and navigate future steps effectively.

Mindfulness is the art of staying in the present, being open and without judgment. It entails accepting the current situation without being hindered by emotions, biases, or repercussions due to ego. Being mindful helps detach yourself from prior conditioning and imminent concerns, promoting a fresh approach to everything. So, how do you decide without past and future references? Your values and objectives in life come into play here. The impact of any decision should be carefully considered, as a series of events connects each decision.

When a client faces a career crossroads, mindfulness can help them make thoughtful decisions. I’d encourage them to use mindfulness practices like meditation or deep breathing to quiet external pressures and tune into their inner thoughts. This allows them to observe emotions and fears without judgment, creating clarity around their decision. By staying present and focusing on their values, strengths, and long-term goals, they can approach their career choice with greater self-awareness. Mindfulness helps them make decisions aligned with their true desires, rather than reacting impulsively to external expectations.

Here are some tips: 1. Ask the client “why now” 2. Help the client to understand that there is no urgency. If there was real urgency, he/she would definitely make a decision. 3. Focus on minimizing stress levels either by breathing, or by identifying positive things in his/her life that are related to the crossroad, or asking others for feedback on what things he/she does well or to reflect back on good moments 4. Build on strengths to realize how the strengths can help (or not) him/her to either of the decisions. 5. Reflect on what he/she has to loose by making one or the other decision. 6. Ask him/her to sleep on it!
