As an executive coach, I’ve noticed that skepticism about change often stems from a fear of the unknown. To address this, I guide clients using a simple analogy: transformation is like upgrading a software system. Initially, there’s resistance because the old system feels familiar, but staying there limits growth. By identifying small “bugs” in their leadership approach—like communication gaps or decision bottlenecks—we co-design targeted “updates.” I also introduce micro-wins early in the process. For instance, encouraging them to delegate effectively can show immediate impact. These quick victories build trust in the process and shift their mindset from doubt to action.

Over time everyone gets comfortable in their comfort zone. Its another matter whether it serves them any good or not. As an executive coach therefore, its important to identify and highlight the gaps in the current situation while focusing on the benefits the transformation will bring in. This process and necessary communication must be completed much before the actual implementation in order to ensure their alignment.

It’s all about the purpose of the coaching agreement. If the client is clear with the goal and end result then explaining the coaching process becomes easier. So the first conversation is on the purpose or objective or end result. Once there is alignment on that, the coach can explain the executive coaching process. Of course as a data point one has the goal discussion as a concrete example.
