I don’t think my clients can “challenge my authority.” One of the things I say to my clients during the initial assessment is, “I bring my professional experience, and you bring your life experience. We are partners on this journey to reaching your goals.” Validating up front that the client brings information to the process is very important when building a therapeutic alliance.

Communication is a very great tools when it comes to working with others, you should communicate clearly what you do and how shall manage expeactions from both sides, as you listen actively from your client so that you don't end up making silly mistakes that could have been avoided from the beginning.

A tool I employ is to have a phrase that I can tell myself as I see the escalation happening to remind myself that the client challenging me has less to do with me and more to do with them. I use this phrase to help me regulate my own emotional responses so that I am able to remain present in the moment with the client and lean into the discomfort that at times can be at the root of the issue.

Challenging client about your authority has negative impact and such a situation is crucial to recognize the causes to address issues maybe lack of trust or weakness of communication,differing goals and values,etc,whatever it require knowledge and skills to tackle.Definition your responsibilities and explain expectations and prevention from misunderstanding from client,actively listening to their attitudes , Create comfortable environment to express their thoughts and ideas by asking for feedback, setting boundaries and follow social work policies and rules and enhance their awareness to understand their position.
