I once inherited an IT organization that had lost the trust of the company, including my "boss" the president and the rest of the leadership table. This loss in trust was valid. IT was a mess. To win their trust back, I met with them and together we created KPIs against which we (IT) could be measured and committed to them. Our performance then allowed us to reestablish ourselves as trusted partners and service providers to the organization.

Manage you mental health too. Don't get overstressed with your difficult boss who could be a micro manager. Learn to explain in layman terms and be firm on what can not be achieved. So if you need to achieve it, what kind of resources or skills need to be invested for this.

Seeking support and Feedback in this scenario is very important but always remember that you are: 1 - Sharing your feelings / perspective in private and not in public. Don't gossip. 2 - Share reasons behind your feelings. 3 - Communicate with facts and effectively. Stay professional. 4- Ask if your colleagues have ever felt the same about someone in a leadership position and what he/she has done in that situation? Surrounding yourself with a network of trusted mentors, friends, and colleagues who can provide guidance, encouragement, and a fresh perspective certainly helps.

In such a scenario, seeking support and feedback from trusted colleagues or mentors can provide valuable insights and guidance. Sometimes if you cannot reason with your boss, its either time to move on or escalate to higher management. In my experience I found that we should escalate to Human Resource or the bosses manager to see if there can be a better way to tackle the situation.

When you are hired to manage a team then you should tell your boss that you prefer any issue to be brought up direct to you and not to go direct to the team. The team member might not know how to communicate effectively with your boss.

It’s probably time you explore other opportunities. The unsupported attitude of a boss is a moral crusher, and makes you not want to work there.

Sometimes, the best path forward is elsewhere. Exploring new opportunities can be a proactive step toward a more fulfilling career trajectory.

Any manager when he/she becomes unsupportive would turn hypercritical and may not be aligned with the team's work. In such a situation, I would recommend the team to follow these tips. 1. Do a self retrospection to know if there is something wrong you are doing a team. If you find something discuss with the manager and try to do things right. 2. Remain loyal to your manager. Sometimes, loyalty can bring back trust. Always support your manager and try to be proactive and keep your manager well informed. 3. Focus more on building your character as a highly skilled and reliable resource. Showcase your achievements on big stages.

In such situations, sometimes having clearly defined and published goals for the team along with strategy and monitoring systems to accomplish them helps a lot. You also need to celebrate each milestone success openly and at the same time communicate the learnings from the failures. This will keep the Team engaged and at the same time have a clear visibility of them.

Celebrate the team to your boss, high light what the team is doing and bring awareness of their activities. Most of the time it’s a perception issue which can be managed through metrics and visibility or communication.
