Your boss is averse to taking risks. How can you change their mindset?

Directly address their concerns and inquire about their comfort level with potential risks and desired outcomes. This approach fosters open dialogue and mutual understanding, paving the way for potential innovation.

Present your boss with concrete data and evidence that supports the benefits of calculated risks. Show examples of how risk-taking has led to success in the past for your company or others in the industry.

There is no return without risk. It is ok to be risk-averse provided you understand the size of lost opportunity. To get over the fear of risk, here is what you can advise your manager to do: 1. identify the risk: list all the risks your manager/team can think of 2. prioritise each risk, assign risk owner, agreed date to address it, and method to treat it: -> Risk avoidance: Completely eliminate the risk by altering plans or approaches. -> Risk mitigation: Reduce the likelihood or impact of the risk through implementing controls/contingency plans. -> Risk transfer: Transfer the risk to a third party, such as insurance/vendor. -> Risk acceptance: Accept the risk if the potential consequences are deemed tolerable or unavoidable.

Aversion to risks is a personality characteristic and can be difficult to change. Some ways you can help your boss step out of their comfort zone include: 1. Start small. Suggest to them actions they can take on non-critical decisions. Several positive results is better than risking a major failure. 2. Offer to share the responsibility. Your boss's confidence in you might help them make a tough decision. 3. Help their confidence by praising them when they make a great decision. Yes, even supervisors need positive reinforcement. Just don't over-do. 4. Offer likely outcome scenarios for taking action and for not taking action. Appeal to your boss's sense of logic. 5. Reason with them by asking questions, rather than making assertions.

Instead of trying to convince your team to implement a full program/project, minimize the scale of the project to a "pilot" which can help ease the concerns of stakeholders who are risk-averse and hesitant to invest in new, unproven ideas. Reducing scale does not mean reducing scope. Run your pilot with the same conviction you would take into a full scale program and measure every possible outcome both qualitatively and quantitatively. Document it, photograph it, and recap everything in a easy to follow 1-page PDF that you can share with your primary stakeholder. This will help prove the value of the risk (which you should frame as an opportunity) and allow your primary stakeholder to wrap their head around your program at scale.

It might be difficult to quantify risk, and there are professionals whose job is to calculate risk. You can consult with one, or if budget is limited, use a specific measure that your company cares about the most. for example, if customer satisfaction is the main factor of success for your team, then write down your satisfaction rate as-is, your rate if you take the risk (the opportunity), the rate if you do not take the risk, this is not the same as your current rate, as if you don't take risk, your competitors will get ahead of you, so your satisfaction rate will go down.

Where might they have taken a risk in the past and it went wrong? How can that be mitigated now? What's at stake if action is taken? If action is not taken? And how can that be managed as best as possible? What do they know that you do not-that is key to minimizing the downfall? What might be different for them and the team if the risk is taken and it's successful? What can be done to minimize unnecessary risk? What do they need to feel comfortable taking the risk and move out of inaction? Yes to all the other elements-while also determining what is behind their resistance to risk?
