Defining your requirements is essential and the nature of those requirements will be subtly different, depending on the equipment sector that you after-sales / aftermarket business is supporting. Different inventory management software packages will be strong in some parts and service sectors e.g. automotive, but not in others, e.g. aerospace or defence. So make sure that the people defining your requirements for you are familiar with the kind of software systems used by others in your industry sector.

As well as the options on the left, you could speak to an expert in after-sales / aftermarket, with past experience of implementing inventory management systems of this kind, for businesses like yours! And by the way, the proper specialist systems that expert after-sales / aftermarket consultants will point you towards or advise you consider, are not the generalist ones that others in this article are suggesting, which are neither use nor ornament!

Another important aspect to consider when choosing inventory management software is how compatible it is with your existing systems and processes. Fit with any existing ERP systems, existing processes and match with your business requirements defined earlier are the main considerations here. Others include ease of use for your staff, cost compatibility with your budget - not just for the software package license but for implementation, interface building, modifications if any are required, etc. These costs can ratchet up very quickly and are often one of the main considerations when buying new software. So make sure your chosen consultancy support (independent of your software supplier) is well versed in these too.

That's why you need inventory management software that can grow and adapt with you. You need a software that can handle increasing volumes and complexity of inventory data, offer new features and functions, and accommodate new trends and technologies. You need a software that can offer you flexibility, innovation, and value for money. Look for a software that has a proven track record, a clear roadmap, and a responsive customer service.

Again, as well as the obvious stuff in the box to the left, you need to consider which business sectors you are in and whether you wish to expand into other sectors where the requirements and business needs are subtly different. For example, demand for the fastest moving automotive parts usually have lots of volume and can be forecasted with simple exponential smoothing techniques. However aerospace and defence parts are much lower in volume and much more erratic demand pattern, even for relatively fast moving parts. So exponential smoothing is the wrong technique for forecasting and driving safety stocks, etc. Better techniques are available and you will therefore need an inventory management package that offers these.

5 Ask for feedback

Finally, before you choose inventory management software, you need to ask for feedback from the people who will use it most: your after-sales team. They are the ones who will interact with the software on a daily basis, and they are the ones who will benefit from its advantages or suffer from its drawbacks.
