Before you go booking any retreat, make sure you've got a solid game plan. Ask yourself: What's the deal with my team right now? What challenges are we tackling, or what opportunities are we eyeing? What skills or habits are we looking to brush up on or kickstart? And crucially, how are we gonna tell if this retreat was a hit? Setting a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goal is your secret weapon here. It helps you zero in on what you really need and shapes a retreat that's tailor-made for your team's ambitions.

I think it is wildly ambitious to expect that some activity is going to really change behaviors in some meaningful way. Certainly value in shared experience but those fun outings don't really change much in my experience. They don't address any root causes of any real issues. Social connection and bonding have value. They just don't solve the behavior problems. In fact, I don't believe they even come close.

1. First, the formulation of goals, then further steps. What aspects of communication do you want to improve? What metrics and indicators do you plan to influence? Be precise and concise in your formulations, break a large goal into small ones. 2. Try to assess reality, the current position of the team, its key goals and pain points as objectively as possible. Prioritize, highlight the most important and less important.

In my experience of planning annual company retreats for years is it's similar to a wedding. You need a theme (one that you plan to solve for or make the rallying cry of the event), you need a good location that mirrors your companies feeling or is pertinent to the messaging you are trying to get across and lastly you need to book the big event/speaker of the retreat if you have one. These are the "big 3" as I call them. Think about what you want everyone to leave thinking, create a slogan/tagline and use that as your filter for everything else.

One thing I've found helpful is to get a small internal committee of people who embody your culture really well and as a small group would represent the larger group in some way or another by their dynamic so that each persons voice is heard and spoken for. Plus, their commitment and excitement on the day of the retreat is so incredible from an energy standpoint.

Retreat venues can vary widely; the first consideration is that the team be allowed to work without interruptions from the organization. Particularly for a leadership retreat, deputies and other subordinates have to know what they can decide in your absence and what an "emergency" really is. From this perspective, a retreat happens twice: the people at the remote location learning to lead together, and the people left behind discovering that they can lead together.

The best retreats to build communication and trust would be to involve your team. Nothing creates trust more than involving your team and team members. Over the years as both an individual contributor and a leader, I've been party to both terrific and lackluster SKOs, club events and retreats. The work life balance extends here too in my opinion. Up early, team breakfast, learning, sharing, planning in the morning and adjourn for team actives and friendly competition in the afternoon or flip-flop. My fondest team memories stem from these.

I always make sure there is a good format that allows for time to engage each other in "free" allotted time, and the remaining should be a great balance of fun and educational.

Critical to a team building retreat is to shift the power dynamic. Create an environment where everyone has an equal voice and make certain that those who have power in the office know to actively give that power up in the retreat. Saying everyone is equal at a retreat is much easier than showing it and making people feel safe. This is especially important if you and the boss and you are leading the retreat and you are not aware how people really feel.

Please remember that most often it is not what program is planned that plays a key role, but how it is ultimately implemented. Please adequately assess your strengths when organizing a retreat - your task is to correctly set expectations and exceed them.

Ensure the activities and environment have everything to do with team building with no relation to work on a consistent basis!

Create a festive atmosphere; create warmth and joy. Make sure participants feel comfortable taking part. Don't do retreats for the sake of retreats - an event that is not organized from the heart will receive the same response.

Retreats may be great for teams that can afford to take a day (or multiple days) away from work and close the office or department completely. But if you're in a business that simply doesn't allow for that, consider closing for a half-day, having another location pick up your slack for a bit (plan to return the favor) and hosting the retreat in the office. Also, have reasonable expectations. Retreats are not a giant RESET button. The outcomes will last only as long as leadership works with the team to sustain them. Improving culture is a marathon, not a sprint. The retreat may map out the training plan, but leadership and staff still have to put in the work every day to finish the race.

Whatever type of retreat you plan, consider following a 90-10 rule where no more that 10% of the time is informational. Pretend you are giving the welcome speech at your best friend’s wedding. Everyone is anxious to get on with the festivities and might not pay you much attention. Do the same at the retreat. 90% or more of the time should be team members participating in whatever you have planned, recreational and work activities. Be sure to include a critique sheet to be filled out by every attendee before they leave. Incidentally, the critique from attendees is a good idea for most meetings.

Don't do retreats for the sake of doing retreats, be genuine and do your best to make the team feel you care and that the atmosphere is amazing. 3.
