I have never take certification program. Maybe it is due to that I have never work as consultant that run a project. However if you are in Indonesia, the geospatial agency has multiple certification program that will help you if you want to get government contract.

In my many years of experience between the military and civilian life, I have used GIS every day. The biggest issue that I have is that when I have times when I was not employed, I didn't use my skill and became rusty. Find as many Certification courses as you can so that you can remain proficient using GIS or else you will lose your skills.

While a GIS Degree is certainly valuable for working in certain fields. It is worth noting that GIS is very broad and applied in different fields, so a GIS Degree might not be necessary for obtaining a GIS role. For example, in the environmental sector, I know several GIS professionals whose degrees are in environmental related majors and their GIS knowledge came from pursuing GIS knowledge outside of school and through job experience.

Online learning is great because most coursework is set to have the person complete the assignments over a week timespan. There is usually one only part of coursework that due at a specific time early in the week and that is the discussion boards. This is due to allowing the other people in the course to answer back. Research the schools before committing to a GIS Program, especially online due to the accreditation status. Some schooling is not accepted by employers due to various reason, accreditation being the biggest one.

- Linkedin Learning has some great introductory courses - ESRI has some good courses online - Penn state has an online textbook "The Nature of Geographic Information" that is free to read and gives good overview of GIS There are also really wonderful threads on reddit discussing people's favorite resources to get into GIS.
