Assessing your strengths is a crucial step before seeking a promotion. Self-awareness of your skills, competencies, and accomplishments is essential in understanding your readiness for advancement. Seeking feedback from colleagues, customers, and mentors can provide valuable insights into your performance and areas for development. By identifying your strengths and weaknesses objectively, you can create a roadmap for growth and improvement. Its important to build on interpersonal skills also, as leadership is not about Success only,as no one remains successful all the time. Data analytics and team building approach will also help.

It is imperative to assess your strength(s) and take your core competencies to the next level. This assessment will rather help you to understand where you stand in relation to others in your organization. One way to approach this assessment is to put yourself to a SWOT analysis and thereby identify your weakness and set them right as you go forward. Despite all your strengths, it's essential not to manifest your weaknesses to your boss in your career journey. One example of the outcome of this assessment exercise is to take a higher degree of initiative in problem solving and decision making which is a key result area of demonstrating your leadership qualities. Needless to say, this will go in your favour while staking promotion claim.

I always found it beneficial to understand the Roles & Responsibilities required for the role that you aspire for and start taking displaying the competencies to handle the next level of responsibilities instead of waiting for the promotion and then handling next level of tasks. Communicate with your Supervisor on a regular basis to clearly define what is required to move to the next level, much before time, and build upon your readiness for the next level/role.

It is essential to demonstrate a willingness and capability to acquire new skills and tackle fresh challenges. Actively seek opportunities to broaden your skill set and deepen your expertise by enrolling in online courses, attending workshops or seminars, and engaging with educational resources like books, blogs, and podcasts. Connect with professional networks, communities, and associations to stay informed about industry trends and best practices. Establish relationships with mentors, coaches, or peers who can provide guidance and support in your professional development journey. Displaying initiative and a curious mindset will showcase your proactive approach to learning and growth, making you a strong candidate for advancement.

A management position, I once heard or read somewhere, is not something you are given, but something you take. Start doing the job before officially being designated a manager. Show the leadership and the courage to do the hard things, to work on more difficult projects, to help team members grow, to improve the team climate, and all the other things a manager would do. Do 50% of your manager's tasks and they'll know you are ready.

Simple.... OK not really. But one key ?? is to not only demonstrate competence through delivery BUT show you have future fit Change Capabilities. A curious mindset that demonstrates critical applied future thinking will increase

I agree with Barack Obama when he said the best piece of career advice he could give is "get stuff done". As a senior exec, my perfect report is someone who doesn't whinge, moan and say how difficult things are to do. They just say "I'll take that action", then they deliver better than I asked for, or expected. A safe pair of hands will always be in my team and get the recognition, reward and promotion that goes with it.

Demonstrate your readiness by action over words. Choose one project and take on some responsibilities of the position you seek next. Be transparent with team members so people understand your intentions and do not feel confused or threatened by your desire to take on more responsibility for a project. It may be helpful to speak with your supervisor first, let them know that you are interested in a promotion, and would like to demonstrate your readiness. Your supervisor can help identify an appropriate project and speak with other team members so they understand the why behind your actions.

I believe, one should always be ready for next promotion. My mentor told me once that opportunity window is only open for 3 seconds and be ready to jump. One should make it a priority to not only excel in existing role but also align their efforts with the responsibilities and skills expected in the future dream role. I firmly believe that candidate selection begins before a role is even posted, which is why one always strive to bring best self to the table. Throughout this journey, one remain humble, never seeking to steal the limelight or credit from others. Be grateful for the support of their team and eager to take on new challenges and make a positive impact.

Organizations are marketplaces of ideas. Thus, those who are able to communicate their oral and written thoughts clearly and succinctly, and demonstrate to the boss why he/she should care tend to excel ahead of their peers. As one moves up in an organization, one's ability to communicate complex ideas simply, effectively, and quickly is what, in general, separates senior management and C-suite occupants from everyone else.
