The title of this article is not correct, so I will focus on the concept of the workshop. In my experience, strategy workshops are a must for any company that is highly matrixed, has complicated solutions, has a global footprint and customer base, or is going through an organizational transformation. Another important benefit is that you can have multiple workshops that support the work you are doing. My personal preference is to do a kickoff workshop and then a workshop when we have 80% of the content. The first workshop serves to align the extended team to the deliverables, the format, the timing, the constraints, etc. The second is to fine tune the deliverable and align on the ultimate ask of the strategy.

Preparation is CRITICAL because you only have one shot at getting it right. What I focus on when doing the preparation is on the agenda, the participants, the roles, and the outcomes. The agenda has to be optimized not to waste time, to maximize dialogue and work. This list of participants is equally important because you need to make sure that you have your core team but also invite key stakeholders who will need to support the strategy. This selection goes hand in hand with defining what is the role of each participant - lead discussion, SME, presenter, scribe, etc. And lastly, I very clearly define what are the outcomes that we want to have out of the meeting, the deliverables.

This is the reason that in the planning phase it's important to not only define who will participate but also what will be the role of each participant. This is when you make a decision of having a dedicated facilitator, rotating the responsibility, or (if you think the team can handle it) not have a formal facilitator.
