You want to improve your team's problem-solving skills. What are the best team building activities to use?

Personally, I think many of these activities are gimmicky. In my experience, the best way to improve any team's ability to problem solve is to always solve for trust and transparency...which removes hidden agendas, reduces change-related anxiety etc.. Tell people everything: what we're trying to solve, why it's a problem, why this team has been selected to fix it, what are the likely outcomes. Give the team the full picture and the odds of successfully figuring out the right answer goes way up.

Creating judgement free zones on a regular bases to air out problems will help the whole team work collaboratively and access more creative solutions.

Brainstorming session is one of the greatest tools for team problems solving techniques, however it needs a very strong leader to make the team focused and also it needs the team to have this win-win mindset so as no one criticizes other’s ideas or stop the flow of ideas I also see from many brainstorming sessions i attended and lead that the most creative ideas come out by the end of the session when our conscious brain is tired and we start to use our subconscious and be creative and out of the box thinkers

Far too often the symptom gets solved and we don’t want that. 2-Now solutions. All ideas are worth sharing. Let’s get every idea on the table. Nobody is allowed to criticize an idea during this step because people stop speaking up and we don’t want that. 3- We take the time to fully understand the ideas. What is someone actually saying? Often ideas get shot down before they are hatched and we don’t want that. 4- Once we’ve narrowed down to a few solutions, now it’s time to talk openly about what’s not going to work. Now we want to pick the most workable solution.

In my experience, scavenger hunts build camaraderie; it is a great way to build team stamina, resourcefulness, and competition creativity. It also builds a sense of family, one sound, one team, one goal, and one dream in mind. They learn to build a unit and can include their strong capabilities.

When designed intentionally they create a great environment for participants to foster camaraderie in a loosely structured way. Conversation prompts can be included that don't feel like cheesy ice breaker questions. When working with clients with strict time limits, I have found sequential hunts are not big winners. Experiences that allow teams to choose their own path and weigh risk and reward within a set amount of time allow for great demonstrations of time and resource management, along with conversations about what the group feels they can do best.

Red Team Networking: The military often uses "Red Teams" to test soldiers. Businesses and Masterminds can easily adapt this concept but instead of fighting people, you inspire the team to fight interesting or even outlandish problems. Step 1, Catastrophize - Ask members to think of the worst things that could derail the team over the next 5 years. Step 2. The facilitator chooses a solvable issue that is most relevant. Step 3. Invite the team to reflect in writing as individuals on how they could contribute and lead an initiative to solve this issue. Step 4. Facilitate a collaboration to improve upon the ideas (Yes, AND...) Step 5. Get agreement on an implementation to lessen or prevent future problems and practice creative solutions.

Role-playing is often undervalued or not taken seriously enough. This provides nearly an unlimited amount of variations and outcomes. It is much easier to relate to, as it can mirror real life situations. It can build confidence in employees in how to handle situations.

My favorite team building is catastrophe case studies that implement role playing to build problem solving. A scenario is chosen that is closely aligned with work that is already being done in the unit that would simulate worst case scenarios. Team members are assigned specifically roles that align with individual development strategies so that you can not only exercise strategic problem solving but also development. The facilitator walks the team through the crisis and what steps are taken to problem solve. The facilitator can incorporate internal policies and procedures to enforce organizational problem solving and process approaches.

I love a good off-site team experience to build rapport and learn about each other’s skills and personalities. Get out of the office after lunch and go to a local ropes course for a couple hours. Fresh air, encouraging each other to work through an obstacle can build great team problem-solving skills.

Sudoku puzzles! Every problem NOT involving people can be solved using four principles together. In fact, EVERY mistake that has been made, regardless of the area, is due to NOT using at least one of these four principles and these four principles are required to solve a Sudoku puzzle! -Causality: The puzzle must be filled with the numbers 1 to 9 -Non contradiction: The numbers 1 to 9 can only appear once in each row, column, and 3x3 local area. -Growth Mindset: The moment you realize you are wrong, fix your mistake...don't argue or stall. -Contrastive Thinking: ONLY put a number in the puzzle when you know that no other number fits. Taking people through a Sudoku while teaching the four principles improves people's problem ability!

I always tried to use problem solving tools from Deming process improvement teachings. This allows learning of the tools while actually working on re real issue they are dealing with. Some of the senior staff would be the team leader which created a third person learn opportunity for them.

One way to bring in long lasting team building is to introduce the Enneagram Personality to the team. It is imperative that not only the team be involved but the manager of the team is as well. Any collective takes on a "personality". With a rollout of the individual's assessments you can see the group's profile - where the strengths are and weaknesses lie in the team. Individual coaching can then be offered to the team members. Many times i have been told by employees that these assessments were gift to their loved ones. To truly be the best both at work and at home.

One more thing which works really well are assignments that team member can work together on that simulate real life problem solving, which are not time bound and involves lot of brainstorming sessions.
