My mother always said you will never get what you want unless you ask for it. She says that even now! So be crystal clear with everyone up, down and parallel to you about what you are doing and why you are doing it. Your desires & motivations should not be a surprise to your teammates; moreover, it would behoove you to know other's desires/motivations - which can help you service them better ;^)

In my experience a lot of time it is good to just call out the elephant in the room. If you are worried you will sound egotistical say something like this... I know this sounds egotistical, and I don't want it to, but I would love to be considered for that promotion. What should I consider first?
