Identifying the goal is like setting the destination on a map. Logical reasoning acts as the compass guiding us toward that goal. To develop your team's skills, use logical reasoning by breaking down the goal into smaller, manageable steps. Help your team understand why each step matters and how it contributes to the overall objective. Encourage them to think critically, solve problems systematically, and make decisions based on evidence and sound reasoning.

Whether it's increasing productivity, enhancing quality of work, fostering innovation, or improving customer satisfaction, the desired outcome should align with broader organizational objectives and strategic priorities. Determine which specific skills are essential for achieving the desired outcome. “Begin with the end in mind” as I was once told. Then work yourself backwards from this point with a clear understanding what steps you need to take, who needs to be developed, and where your shortcomings lie.

An example of good practice that I have incorporated is peer to peer coaching/mentoring or “symbiosis”. The 1st step is building a team with diverse skill set & identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each team player (via self assessment and stakeholder feedback). 2nd step is identifying potential partnerships where each player can help coach the other and build up their strengths. Eg- pairing up a teammate who has fear of public speaking/ presentations but is very sound at the technical skills with someone who is great at presentations but may need some extra help with the technical aspects of work. Such partnerships lead to a happier team with healthy relationships and build the team’s skills effectively at the same time.
