To develop leadership skills in innovation, immerse yourself in environments that challenge conventional thinking. Seek mentorship from visionary leaders who exemplify innovative thinking. Participate in workshops and courses focused on creative problem-solving, design thinking, and agile methodologies. Practice by leading small-scale innovation projects within your organization, learning from both successes and setbacks. Foster a culture of curiosity and experimentation within your team, encouraging diverse ideas and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Regularly reflect on your leadership approach, staying open to feedback and continuously adapting. Remember, innovation in leadership is a journey of lifelong learning and growth.

Developing leadership skills in innovation is crucial for driving growth, fostering creativity, and staying ahead in today’s dynamic business landscape. I’ll outline key strategies to enhance your innovative leadership capabilities. 1) Mastering Innovative Leadership: Innovation is the lifeblood of progress. As a leader, cultivating an environment that encourages creativity, experimentation, and collaboration is essential. Here are practical steps to elevate your innovative leadership: a) Foster a Learning Mindset: Innovation thrives in an environment that embraces continuous learning. As a leader, commit to ongoing personal and professional development.

Do leadership qualities and competencies in innovation really differ from leadership qualities in general? I do not think so. As Mintzberg said, leaders have three important roles: interpersonal contact, gathering information, and making decisions. If leaders master those roles (especially the informational role), they will also be able to do the right things in terms of innovation.

To develop leadership skills in innovation, seek opportunities for learning and experimentation. Engage in training programs, workshops, and seminars focused on creative problem-solving and design thinking. Foster a culture of innovation within your team by encouraging idea generation, collaboration, and risk-taking. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities and continuously explore new methods and approaches to drive innovation in your leadership role.

The most important people or places to learn from others when looking to improve your leadership skills in innovation is within your own team/organization. Design thinking throughout history has been linked to innovations. Yet, until recently, has it been applied to leadership. Yet where more is there a need for innovation than the myriad of problems a leader and their team/organization that require creative solutions. It's why I teach design thinking for leaders (which I call leading by design). By empathizing with our team members, defining the problems that are in the way of achieving your vision, ideating, prototyping, and testing you begin to not only improve your ability to innovate but so many more leadership skills.

b) Encourage Experimentation and a Mistake-Friendly Environment: Innovation often emerges from trial and error. Encourage your team to experiment, take calculated risks, and learn from failures. Create a safe space where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth. Celebrate both successes and setbacks—they are stepping stones toward breakthroughs. c) Foster a Culture of Diversity and Inclusion Innovation flourishes when diverse perspectives collide. Surround yourself with people from varied backgrounds, experiences, and skill sets. Encourage open dialogue and respect differing viewpoints. Inclusion sparks creativity and ensures that your solutions resonate with a broader audience.

Design thinking for leaders (which I call leading by design) is the future of leadership. By learning the skills of design thinking leaders learn how to co-create with their teams in ways that experiment and iterate in a way that helps the team/organization ideate, prototype and test that discovers new opportunities both within and without the organization. Design thinking for leaders is like open-source for change management. A powerful tool that shifts leaders from forcing change to co-creating change. And when leaders use it to transform the inside of their organization then what they can achieve outside their organization is elevated as well.

Find something you're passionate about and learn how to create an income stream with it. It will require you have a vision, action plan and solutions for those seen and unseen challenges you'll face. Then you've got real tangible things you can be curious about and ask questions, do research and perhaps even find something you never expected.. freedom to do your own thing.

Cultivate agility by staying attuned to industry trends, monitoring competitors, and adjusting your strategies as needed. Be willing to pivot when necessary, even if it means challenging the status quo. e) Promote and Reward Collaboration Break down silos within your organization. Encourage cross-functional collaboration. When teams collaborate, ideas flow freely, and synergies emerge. Recognize and celebrate collaborative efforts. Consider implementing innovation challenges or hackathons to foster teamwork and creative problem-solving.

Many leaders are adept at challenging themselves and their teams with ambitious goals. However, the manner in which they do this results in higher stress, more employee burnout, and over time results in higher turnover rates. The secret sauce to setting ambitious goals that don't result in these negative outcomes but instead increases innovation is by using design thinking as a leadership practice. When leaders use empathy (phase 1 of design thinking) with their employees they learn the obstacles standing in their employees way of achieving these lofty goals. Co-creating these solutions brings excitement, engagement, innovation, and ultimately a faster path to the successful achieve of the ambitious goal.

Take leadership in learning and acquiring innovation skills. Seek opportunities that challenge your beliefs, comfort zone, and ways of doing things. When you focus on personal development, you are walking on the path of self-exploration. The more you explore within yourself, the more you can challenge yourself to go farther, take risks, set bigger goals, and achieve greater things. Innovate yourself first, then lead others.

Here's a challenge: Talk to your peers or superiors and ask them to identify their most challenging scenarios. Then go sit with them and be curious within yourself, first, then find a cohort willing to listen and reflect on your findings.

f) Stay Informed and Embrace Emerging Technologies Innovation often rides on the back of technological advancements. Stay informed about emerging technologies relevant to your industry. Explore how artificial intelligence, blockchain, or data analytics can transform your processes. Be an early adopter when it makes strategic sense. g) Be a Visionary and Communicate the Big Picture As an innovative leader, you must paint a compelling vision of the future. Communicate your organization’s purpose, mission, and long-term goals. Inspire your team by connecting their work to this larger vision. When everyone understands the “why,” they become more invested in driving innovation.

Reconocer los activos intangibles dentro de la empresa, marcas, patentes, know how, pero también reconocer el talento de tu equipo y usar ese recurso humano para maximizar resultados innovando en productos o servicios.

Truly successful innovation succeeds because it has met the needs of users. What's interesting in the description is that this skill of empowering your team uses the phrase "you need" five times. Yet empowering a team is about what "THEY need". What do they need to understand the vision and values clearly? Where do they see disconnects in what you communicate as your vision & values and your actual actions? Where would they like to see innovation (likely the obstacles they encounter day in and day out to reach their goals)? Where is the breakdown in trust, or where do they need more trust from you as a leader? To empower your team leaders should focus less on what you need personally and more on what they need as your team.

The necessity to reflect and improve to be a more innovative leader is exactly the reason design thinking is the future of leadership. When you use DT it starts with the empathy phase which is all about seeking feedback and understanding the team, customers, stakeholders and peers and the challenges and needs they face in light of your vision and goals. And that is just the launching pad. Leaders using design thinking continue to reflect and improve throughout the process. From ensuring you are defining the problem correction, to ideation, to prototyping and testing. Reflecting and improving is baked into every phase of design thinking. And the outcome - innovation.

Consider fostering a culture of psychological safety within your team. This creates an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas, taking risks, and challenging the status quo. For example, encourage open discussions by actively listening to all viewpoints and refraining from criticism. Share your own failures and how you learned from them. This approach empowers your team to innovate freely, fostering a collaborative and creative atmosphere.

Innovation leadership is not about having all the answers; it’s about creating an ecosystem where creativity thrives. By fostering a learning mindset, embracing diversity, and championing collaboration, you’ll propel your organization toward groundbreaking solutions. Remember, innovation starts at the top

Lo primero y más importante, comienza por un auto diagnóstico. Saber de dónde partes te ayudará a impulsar aún más tus fortalezas y a decidir si es necesario trabajar en algún área de mejora que esté siendo incapacitante. Lo siguiente es mirar a tu alrededor y buscar inspiración (y llegado el caso, ayuda) en quienes son ya referentes en la materia. Y, a partir de ahí, aplicar el famoso marco de aprendizaje del 10% de formación, 20 % de interacción y 70% de experiencia directa.

The most important thing to understand is that innovation comes from research (probe). Hence, attend as mush various courses as you can. This way you will wider your perception of understanding how some processes work, and afterwards you will use some parts of it in other projects. Some call it "lesson learned".

Do you want to be creative and innovative for someone else's vision, or your own? As you find your strengths and build your skill set, an opportunity you never expected migh appear.

Get involved with your team. Good leaders get involved and aid their team as members, not just as marshalls watching on from a distance. Be comfortable letting others drive when their ideas align with the team's long-term goals.
