Begin by identifying individuals within your industry whom you admire or whose work aligns with your interests.Reach out to them through professional platforms like LinkedIn or attend industry events,or conferences,where you can meet professionals face-to-face.When initiating contact,personalize your outreach by referencing common interests,or mutual connections. Be genuine in your approach and express your admiration for their work or expertise. Offer value by sharing relevant insights, articles, or resources that may be of interest to them. Cultivate these relationships over time by maintaining regular communication, whether through occasional check-ins, sharing updates on your own projects, or seeking advice or mentorship.

Researching your prospects require a lot of time. But this gets easier once you have a goal in mind. Follow your professionals on platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, or industry-specific forums. Engage with their content by liking, commenting, and sharing valuable insights. This not only gives you a bit of light but also gives you more understanding on your mentor/professional.

One of my favorite LinkedIn filters to use when building new relationships with professionals is the "Past company" filter. For example, I used to work in my family's restaurant, so I filter for professionals in an industry that worked at the most common restaurants (McDonalds, Subway, Burger King, Starbucks, Dominoes, etc.). In my outreach message, I mention their transition from the restaurant industry to XYZ industry and that I also used to work in a restaurant. The common background works wonders in breaking the ice and laying the foundation for a new relationship!

I always connect with the prospects in online or offline groups. Make myself more visible by liking, commenting and involving myself. If you get a chance meet them in conferences, events & seminars. These provide excellent opportunities to meet them face-to-face and exchange contact information

Respect their time and allow the connection to develop naturally.

Quite novel at this, but it is really to pay attention to the details of their lives. Actually take an interest, and since I love events and festivals I recommend upcoming events that may interest them. Part of what I like to champion of Alistair Humphrey's "micro adventures." There is always the big thing, but much of that is dreaming versus going and doing something today.
