We have a WhatsApp team chat which allows the team to connect on lighter topic usually wishing a team rember on their birthday or congratulating on special occasions or achievements. It is really helpful especially since we have a very geography diversity team, a channel to be connected in real time.(bummer for China located members ??) Strongly recommend all teams to create one.

If it is required only then we should be using whatsapp communication. It is better to use company acquired tools like Hangouts, teams, Google meets etc.

Why WhatsApp? If the goal is to “build professional relationships with your team”, you should use a platform that is chosen by the company, and in most cases it's Slack or other specifically created apps for internal communications. There you have team chats for everything described by other contributors. My humble opinion about, decision to move conversations outside the corporate communication platform for “professional” purposes is unprofessional. If you want to motivate your team, send a shiny and sunny greeting in the team chat. Want to share feedback? Use internal platform for it, too. Better do it face to face. When you use non-internal channels, you are flooding your team members, mostly, and not behaving professionally.
