Depending on what avenue of a career in GIS you take, builder, user, promoter, etc. a team can help you through this process. Having built in GIS, I found data to be my biggest asset in developing a robust GIS. Although many datasets are available, not all apply and networking with the right people to acquire that dataset can make all the difference.

Certification is the most time wasting thing to do in this era where things are so fast moving. Esri just launched their ChatGPT integration product to do geospatial analysis via chat prompt. Being certified on remote sensing will increasingly become less attractive. Instead, try to learn all these modern tools such as Google Earth Engine, Leafmap, DuckDB and our PlanetGPT (launching in Q2 2024) together with new concepts such as Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF.

As far as I can see, certifications aren't much use, especially if you already have a rich CV or portfolio. This knowledge is better used for professional development than any certification. It's necessary to have a basic foundational knowledge of GIS, which you'll learn at university and by studying on your own; other things will come from courses and self-interested research.

Because for example if you want to map NDVI for a specific area and you don't even know about the NDVI equation or you do not know about the Availability of Satellite, their resolution, you can't do even a single task . CHATGPT is Fast but needs subject knowledge to get benefits quickly.

Taking responsibilities in your workplace is a good way to advance. By taking the lead in certain projects, and initiatives, you will gain new experience and perspectives in the GIS world. Your resourcefulness and willingness to try will certainly get you further than where you once were.

It sounds odd, but decide what you want to do. You can get handcuffed doing a single task with GIS, but there are tonnes of disciplines including coding, data management, analysis, statistics, and a plethora of others. I found a niche in IT GIS, which is quite rare. Find your niche, and build from there. From there look at other niches that relate. For example, after spatial analysis, look at coding to help with spatial analysis, etc.

Just do it. Combine all the above and jump into finding your own project. Find the challenge/question and seek out some unique data. Apply the tools (learning s you do in an auto-didactic environment) and share your learnings/outcomes as a part of your wider professional portfolio.
