In my opinion, transformational program management is essential for driving profound and impactful changes within an organization. Unlike traditional program management, which focuses on coordinating projects for specific benefits, transformational program management aligns with long-term strategic goals to fundamentally alter an organization’s structure, culture, processes, or operations. This approach requires a strategic vision and involves comprehensive cultural shifts, integrating various organizational aspects for sustainable change. Strong leadership and stakeholder engagement are crucial, as is fostering innovation and agility to quickly respond to market changes.

One thing I have found helpful is the ability to think laterally to solve problems because we do face real challenges. I would also say is our ability to handle crisis is also so important.

As a program manager you need to develop many skills and competencies in order to become successful. Communication is one of the most important skills to have in order to communicate continuously with all the stakeholders of the program, effectively and efficiently. Mentoring and coaching skills are equally important because as a true leader you will need to help towards the professional development of the professionals working beside you. You need to be proactive and foresee issues and risks that may affect the whole program and its aspects. Last but not least, you need to develop empathy and emotional intelligence. Such skills will help you understand the environment and the people around you so to bring into reality a succesful program.

For me, the transition to a program manager role was a natural progression. At some moment in time, I started handling so complex projects that it made more sense to split them into a set of separate projects of a smaller scale (or, how in some businesses they are called "workstreams"), and manage them in a coordinated manner instead of trying to chew an elephant. My advice for seekers will be not to get scared by more responsibilities, train the holistic view and system thinking, train the team building skills, take care of the governance at scale.

Program manager manage the strategy of executing multiple projects, whereas project manager manages the sequence of activities ( schedule). In my own experience, understanding wide range of stakeholders ( as compared to few stakeholders at project level) who come from different regiions, culture is very important. So, when you are a project manager, one of the first task to migrate to program manager role is to keenly observe your program manager, what meetings they have, what are the unique challenges, balancing act between multiple groups, keeping an eye on the overall group/organization level objectives.

Transitioning into program management demanded proactive learning, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement. Through seeking training, workshops, and mentorship, I honed skills in project management to preside over components with confidence. Collaborative environments, supported by leadership, nurtured innovation and problem-solving. Effective stakeholder engagement, including clients and team members, was paramount. I’ve worked with projects off and on for the past 20 years while serving in the Navy. I personally moved from projects to programs while moving up the promotion ladder and then through higher level positions. I say get good at managing projects and then move to a larger scope as a program manager.

There is a whole lot of things here ! Success is about setting the objectives and meeting it. So, set a practical target, define steps, prioritize the steps, take steps towards achieving objectives and enjoy success of reaching every step, which finally should lead to the objectives. This may be a long journey, but remember, any journey starts with a baby steps. Start focus on performance areas - Understanding organization business, strategic objectives, how to manage benefits (not only the project capabilities), engaging negative stakeholders with high level resistance levels, and finally, how to collaborate with others instead of seeing them as a compititors. Everyday, start looking at things from a program manager perspective.

I would say managing a program is very complex task, being able to keep on track interrelated projects feeding their outcome to a continuously running program is not simple to do. It starts by assigning the right people into their right role. Success requires mainly the right team of project managers with full determination and motivation to drive program targets and align stakeholders expectations. Program team should steer altogether towards the set vision and goals. It is not just a skill but a state of art to form the team. Mainly the program manager should rightly and swiftly fit the right team into the program, this is the secret ingredient for program success.

To me, I think many a PM short change the definition of "right" and exclude people who could either rise to the occasion and/or simply operate differently but get results. Recognize others talents.
