From my experience time shouldn't be managed. Give the team the trust they deserve as adults, and if the activity that is measured against their role isn't coming through in the output then adjustments need to be made. However you set the expectations and boundaries early on and make them very clear. You will find if you trust your team from the outset you will not only have buy in, but also a team that works for you rather than against you.

You can even add self reminders on Slack similar to Google Calendar. If a meeting/task does not happen on that day, you can plan ahead by booking your own calendar when you plan for that meeting/task or give self todo on Asana. Employees should have habit to track their day & avoid managers doing micro-managing as a repercussion.

In my experience the tool is not that as important as the way it is used. A great tool that is misused brings little benefit. The PM should decide on the best tool for tracking time based on the needs and scope of the project and then be consistent and efficient in the use of that tool throughout the project.
