You need to test your network’s fiber optic cables. What’s the best tool for the job?

An OTDR is like a flashlight and radar detector combined. It sends light down the fiber and measures what reflects back and where. The more light returned, the higher the signal loss. Picture standing in a dark field with a flashlight shining – a faint cone can be seen in the empty space from small reflections off particles in the air but a cow 50 yards away bounces back a lot more, illuminating it. Similarly, the OTDR can see small reflections caused by impurities in the glass return but large events like bends, splices, or cuts reflect more because they physically block the path. By calculating the return time divided by the speed of light in glass (~200,000 km/s), the OTDR pinpoints distance and amount of signal loss of each event.

OTDR is optical time domain reflectometre , which measure the optical losses or the break in optical fiber through real time analysis by sending pulse of laser light signals. It is also used for generating Optical fiber Trace report or study the strength of optical signal

OTDR uses light pulses and back scattering to measure the distance and signal loss along that distance down a fibre route. It measures the time it takes the pulse to go and then come back towards it and multiplies the time with speed of signal in that specific fiber using it's refractive index. It draws a graph showing the overall slope of the signal as it propagates through the fiber which gives us an idea about general health of the link. Other than that, it measures insertion loss and reflection at each event in the link using the backscattered lights intensity at that specific point. It does so by averaging the intensity level of multiple pulses sent through the fiber at same specific point during the sampling time slots configured.

The previous insights are of course correct, but I'd like to stress that an OTDR is also the perfect tool to monitor the fiber in-service, hence 24x7, for degradation (over time or suddenly). This will allow for pro-active maintenance instead of reactive maintenance. It will reduce downtime or MTTR drastically. Couple the OTDR to a GIS (geographical information system) and you can even get a fault location on a map directly to speed up things even more. The above is only addressing one flavour of OTDR. With coherent OTDRs or distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems you can monitor many other things to, like traffic, digging activities, seismic activities, and many more!

There are primarily two reasons to use an OTDR; first, to validate individual components of a fiber pathway to make sure they’re in spec, and second - to troubleshoot a circuit that is down. The OTDR tells you the quality of individual splices, connectors, or other events happening along the length of the cable so it's often the test performed that proves an installation meets the quality threshold defined. For troubleshooting, if you have a link that is down or has a high attenuation, plugging the OTDR into one end and shooting out will tell you how far away the issue is which gives the technician an idea of where to start looking to see what's going on.

basically otdr had a laser and measurement at once. fastest way to troubleshot broken fiber is to use the laser and search where the cut is if the cable are short. when the cable too long use the measurement and locate the cut based on diagram to pin point where the cut is ??

While various tools are available to help test a network, an OTDR is the gold standard for troubleshooting. It provides where and what the issue is within a minute or less, why gives it a major advantage over using a light source/power meter to chase and segment an issue. OTDR results are often required with new networks as well, however, there greatest value to a network owner is finding troubles

Using an OTDR is relatively simple and many of todays OTDRs have “smart” functions to greatly reduce the learning curve of troubleshooting. The below steps will ensure an accurate trace; 1. Clean. Clean your port, your launch cable, and Network access point 2. Use a launch/Receive cable to remove dead zones, allowing more accuracy on near events 3. Test with two wavelengths 1310/1550 allows better event recognition

some Basic Tips for a starter: 1)cleaning before connecting is good. Inspecting before connecting with a microscope for example is better. 2)To measure the first connector you need a launch lead. How long does a launch lead need to be? It depends on the pulse and the deadzone but here some guidelines (that I use) 150m is ok all under 150m, 500m is ok for all under a few kms, 1km up to 50km and 2km for 100km and more. 3)Before testing use the live test method to define the proper range on your screen. look for a pulse to reach the end. Most OTDRS have also an auto function that gives you an easy solution to have the right range and pulse. There is so more to be told but this is a start 5) test time I would suggest to begin with 30 secs.

To accurately use an OTDR you must use the correct index of refraction of the fiber being tested, therefore you need to know parameters of the fiber.

Here some elements you can find. From simple to Advanced. Simple: 1) Long decreasing line = Fiber 2) A peak = an airgap in the fiber like a connector intermediate 3)A drop = a loss on a specific small area like a splice 4) A gain = 2 cables spliced on each other where the OTDR measures a diffrence in Mode Field diameter. Advanced 5) if 1310 and 1550 have a different value on a drop and 1550 is more then 0,5db higher then 1310 = bending (bendings you can only see with 2 wavelengts) 6) apearing peaks in your network that are not there in reality = ghosts and that means for 90% that the first connectors are really not clean!!!

very well and simplified explained by Timmy Louis, I just want to add that it is best to take measurements from both ends (if possible) in order to have a better understanding of what you "see". The light reacts differently on the same "event/obstacle" depending on its direction. For instance a Drop is not always a bad splicing, because if there is a Gain on the same location in the measurement from the other end, that means that 2 different fiber type (mode field diameter) are spliced there. Also measuring the same fiber more than once, with different parameters (wavelength, RI, pulse, time etc.) may revel to you different events! Only do that when you are troubleshooting a fiber path and you cannot locate the issue with 1st trace.

Problems is see with testing. 1) Cannot measure because of active light: unplug the laser on the other side or use a filtered port with 1625 or 1650nm source (for singlemode only) 2) the tester is giving strange length results. Define the launchbox and the beginning of the measurement is 0m 3) The lengths of 2 different otdrs on same fibers are different: Both OTDRs have different IOR. 4) noise on the trace. All under 8dB power is considered noisy so it’s best to stay above 8dB if you want a clean test. Is the rest noisy then test longer. 5) ghosts appear on a trace because of dirty connectors (especially in singlemode) cleaning cleaning cleaning. 6) measuring splitters: That’s for next time. Not enough space for that here ??

Do not forget to look if your OTDR is encircled flux enabled, compatible or it’s not sayin anything. Certified testing on MM fibers it’s mandated to fill the hole core with light and with out encircled flux you will not fill the core and losses will not appear fast. Unfortunately you can also overfill the core so you fill a bit cladding to. Now you will see a high loss in the beginning…

When selecting an OTDR the options can be overwhelming from choosing a manufacturer, model, and specs Understand Major Choices; 1. Handheld Vs Platform/modules; handhelds are usually less expensive, but not as flexible in the future as a Platform/module route 2. Wavelengths, spec with some flexibility 1310/1550 a standard. Recommend a 1650 live filtered port for future networks/Ftth testing 3. Models, most models do the same functionality but have more/less dynamic range. Which simply means you can test further distances 4. Bells and whistles; spend the money on a power meter and Vfl

There are some basic questions I always ask to my customer. I you can answer them yourself you can find the right OTDR for you. 1) Multimode and/or singlemode? 2) How many Kms do you want to test? 3) Are you a seasoned user or do you need a easier way to test? 4) Do you need to save results in the cloud? 5) Do you need to test on a passive network or do you want to test also on a active network? (is there light on the fiber to measure yes or no?) with these 5 basic questions answered you have more or less the right OTDR to use.
