It may have subscriptions to data bases, and depending on the library there may be a genealogy collection and a knowledgeable librarian. There may also be a Church of Latter Day Saints library nearby, or a local historical collection or a genealogical society that may have classes or one-on-one help. There are many online resources, some of which are free. Don’t pay for anything until you’ve checked other possibilities.

As someone who lives overseas, I use the catalogues on Ancestry and FamilySearch in my genealogical research, in addition to books on a particular topic, such as the Revolutionary War.

Librarians are happy to give a tour of the archives to new users. Contact your library or archives and ask for a tour. Remember also that some items in the archives may not be listed in the catalog. Ask the librarian or archivist about your specific research goals.

I with my cousin's son used Ancestry.com and My Heritage to find relatives who came to this country from Poland and Ukraine. We were successful in finding some of our roots at Ellis Island. As far as my Sicilian side, it was easy using Ancestry.com. However I can only trace my relatives to the USA--from here I have to go to Sicily, Ukraine (not possible) and Poland (iffy). My older cousins have been helpful filling in the gaps.
