You need to hire a motivational speaker for your company event. What should you look for?

I agree to the listed five points here, but what i also experienced this in my career...... Anybody with common sense is OK, provided he/she gets connected to the audience. You never know whose words will trigger the fire in people. However, if the speaker knows how to build conversation, can do effective job!

Before any keynote I always ask my clients ‘What do you want people to do or think differently as a result of the event?’ and ‘What do you want people to think or do differently as a result of my keynote?’ I also like to know what ‘challenges’ they face in achieving those things.

Look for top voices in the industry and topic you need in forums like LinkedIn etc. 3. Do check for any certifications on the topic as it will lend more credibility during the event. 4. Check for references who can vouch for the authenticity, past events feedback of the identified speaker(s). 5. Do speak to the speaker (if possible in person) to assess the interest levels based on the event context.

I would definitely recommend to watch a few videos of the speaker because it immediately gives a good impression of the style & content. Does it fit with the goals that you want to achieve for your target audience. Another element is check references - does the speaker has some testimonials of companies in your industry? And maybe a very good element is checking if you have common connections with that speaker - if you can get a first hand experience from somebody about a speaker, that's of course gold.

Speak with the speaker. Feel their energy. Most of the time you will hear the passion and the energy they are able to transmit.

A couple of times, I have been in discussion with organizations that would have been a phenomenal fit for my message, but they end up hiring another speaker with a recognizable name, and hope for the best. Who will leave them with nuggets that they can walk away with to empower their lives, business, profession or organisation? Who will show them a different yet relevant perspective? If you are aiming to have more than one speaker, then create variety of narrative. Also if you are thinking you want a 'disruptive' speaker - do you really? Do you really understand what 'disruptive' means? Often people choose someone who rants. Do you want your audience to be buzzing or do you want them to think 'meh'...the energy will communicate itself very quickly.

Asessing the fitness of the speaker for the audience as well as his ability to keep the audience glued to their seats and keeping them engaged makes all the difference.

If you want value, you need to spend. Hence it's important to assess what is the value offering to the audience especially in this age where a lot of knowledge/ learnings/inspiration can be found online through podcasts/video interviews/recordings of earlier speeches/writeups I have seen that most customers/companies who seek me out do not negotiate as they are absolutely sure of why they want me at the event and hence are willing to pay that fee. Similarly you can get the desired speaker only when you know what you want and hence budget for that person's fee

Not many speakers love to be approached and then asked to speak for free! I'd encourage any host or speakers to have an open conversation upfront so that expectations are met on both sides. The relationship starts way before the speaker enters the room, so a collaborative approach had seen me recommended and rebooked multiple times. Get someone from a different walk of life; a different career, industry, culture, etc., This will leave a lasting impression and give the team a new topic to bond over long after the event is over.
