My 2 cents: I do NOT advocate building your content directly in the LMS (using the LMS's content development features). If you ever decide to switch LMS, it will be a nightmare. My preferable method is to always build content using a proper external authoring tool (such as Storyline, Rise, Camtasia, Captivate etc.), and using the LMS merely to host and manage content and learners.

One of the key considerations is EASE of organization. A lot of LMS solutions provide organization, but how EASY is that organization? How easy is to reuse your content between classes, between semesters, and on an ongoing yearly basis? Can access to content be controlled through the individual classes rather than at the file level? Can content be marked as "public" so that it's universally accessible in your varied courses and/or throughout the entire organization?

If you have a 10 minute video, does the LMS provide ways to ensure the learned is actually watching the video and it not just rolling along in the background while they do other things? Granted, these checks may have to come by way of content knowledge assessments, but if the system can help track such data, that could prove useful to the instructor.

Rather than simply adding any multimedia file that you find, focus on your overall learning strategy so that adding this content becomes a part of a larger objective.
