Using a small 3D printer to check whether or not specialized gripper fingers will work can be a massive time and money saver in the end. Doing actual precision machining on the actual material is expensive. Cheaper, quicker prototypes can be 3d printed for proof of concept. Sometimes this is enough to get the customer to issue the PO and down-payment on a project needed to fund the final, more expensive tooling.

For precision part manufacturing, casting is excellent choice but you need to create a mold using 3D printer and then create your part. The best tools for casting is induction heating which works for small parts.

Outsourcing for prototyping is often a viable alternative to doing it in-house, and doesn't always have to break the bank. Not every prototyping workshop has every imaginable manufacturing method - nobody has every tool they ever need, and many services are available locally and internationally that can produce your part to spec, particularly for parts with niche production processes like PCBs or precision machined metal.
