You need to create custom parts using 3D printing. How can you ensure you’re using the best tools?

One of the many misconceptions I usually hear from customers is that "3D-scanning" could replace the CAD Design phase of 3D printing. Although 3D scanning might pose an easy workaround for the design phase, the reality is that post-processing for 3D scanning is laborious and, somehow, tedious. Also, state-of-the-art scanners are expensive and, even though there are low-cost scanners, their resolution is not enough to get a nice CAD-desing right out of the box.

There are many modelling softwares you can use. Generally for engineers, we tend to lean towards Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, and Fusion 360. They are generally useful multi-purpose softwares in my opinion. I have friends in the space using Rhino for artistic works and it works well for them. I believe that most 3D modelling softwares allows exporting to STL file formats (this is the format used in slicer softwares for 3D printers). So, you are generally safe when selecting any random 3D modelling software as long as there is STL export as an option. Alternatively, if you are working on less known file types, you can always look for STL conversions online. Have fun and stay creative!

Sketch Up is not the best 3D CAD program to use for 3D printer files. Two water-tight shells cannot share a common surface in SketchUp. This can be worked around, but it adds more steps.

This is how I got started. I bought parts and requested the parts' 3D CAD drawings. I imported them to makerbot format and printed them. Some parts that need high precision may need varying the temperature, routing, printing speed, layer numbers, etc. Final trimming may be required after the parameters seem to be perfected. I was also using blender to make CADs. Combining simple geometries using the boolean operators was enough for my design. Using this method can us generate drawings similar to those provided by part vendors. ually

Professional and high end commercial 3D printers include proprietary software that combines slicer and printer control interfacing specifically designed to produce high reliability, reduce the need for experimentation with settings, and offers feature control to optimize print results. Open source software is primarily used by budget printers, which demand setup/experimentation in order to realize a suitable end result. The tradeoff between cost and performance in 3D printing is that the industrial level equipment produces superior part quality with minimal variability and user involvement in processing, while results from budget friendly equipment using open source software are dependent on the ability of the operator.

The advice here is ok with consumer use of 3D printing. For industrial use, the best is to take advice from either the machine manufacturer or experimented users with the same machine. The procedure vary on the type/brand/tech of machine you are using.

Slicing is more an art that reflects the end results. so, based on the 3D printer and technology type a slicer should be chosen to customise the final results considering the factors like time, material, finishing etc.

2. Slicing Tools: The choice of slicing software can significantly impact the quality and success of your 3D prints. This choice often depends on the specific 3D printer you are using, as some printers come with proprietary slicing software. However, for versatility and broader compatibility, open-source options like PrusaSlicer offer a balance of user-friendliness and advanced features, making it a solid choice for various users. For those seeking more sophisticated options with enhanced performance features, Cura is a well-regarded paid alternative that supports a wide range of printers and materials, providing more control over the slicing parameters and thus the final print quality.

In the printing stage, optimizing file transfer to your 3D printer is crucial. While SD cards and USB cables offer simplicity, they come with limitations like manual handling and a lack of remote access. For enhanced control, OctoPrint, a free software connecting to a Raspberry Pi, enables remote access, providing convenience and flexibility. Alternatively, AstroPrint offers a cloud-based solution, allowing internet connectivity and access from any device. The choice between these tools depends on your specific needs, ensuring a seamless 3D printing process for creating custom parts.

Communicstion and transfer of files to commercial 3D printersnis through wired or wireless network connection, wh|re the final.processing software provides multiple job controls in addition to printer communication. This not only produces a higher level of print quality, these interfaces provide queing of part builds from multiple users of one printer, and ability to schedule printer work to optimize machine time and serve scheduling needs. Lower end printers are better suited to single user operation, where the printers setup, part processing, and scheduling is managed on a part by part level by a single entity.

Again, the advice given is for consumer use or small business use. In the industry, the name of such softwares is MES, there is a lot of them, with good and bad integration with industrial additive manufacturing. Again, I would interrogate your local experts (technical centers, universities, etc.) and the machine vendor. Setting up a list of requirements, a presentation and demo with various vendors can help you.

Another thing to consider is what your investment in buying, maintaining, and calibrating a 3D printer is worth vs. Outsourcing your production to any number of custom shops or companies like shapeways.

If possible, the first prototypes should be printed with help of cheap and environmentally friendly filaments. The prototype itself should be divided into smaller groups of parts to ensure that the desired requirements are met. Such an approach will definitely reduce potential errors and flaws in the final product, as well as cost and development time.

The work of creating parts using 3D printing demands an understanding of 3D design model development, the characteristics, time and costs of 3D printed parts in general, a knowledge of the levels of 3D printing software and hardware utilized, and the materials employed, and a plan that includes evaluation of the volume of work that needs to be done. There is no single solution to 3D printing, and the cost of failing to accurately anticipate requirements can be costly and time consuming.
