You need to create 3D models of mechanical parts. What's the best tool for the job?

I understand most people would suggest Solidworks, Catia, fusion360 and so on. But I would suggest you something else. FreeCAD. FreeCAD is open source and completely free. It is very similar to Catia in many aspects and it is functionally very capable like any other CAD software. Since it is open source, there's a big community out there to help you out if you need some help. There are tonnes of YouTube tutorials for all sorts of modelling using FreeCAD. As a startup you don't have to invest in a license (or use pirated software versions and fear everyday). You can utilise FreeCAD to its fullest potential without paying anything to get the software. And most importantly you are supporting the open source community.

The problem is never with the software, it is always with the user. If software exists it is because it has value. We needed operators with much more knowledge of manufacturing, assembly, design, the rest any software can do. There is a rule that must always be followed, bringing the modeling process closer to the manufacturing and assembly sequence. O problema nunca é do software, é sempre do utilizador. The usage of CAD s/w is purely driven the industry verticals, Ease of Integration with PLM, Connectivity for upstream & downstream processes. Aero engine OEMs trust NX. Aero structure OEMs prefer Catia, because of sheet metal parts. Oil & Gas majors prefer Solid works. Automotive OEMs rely on Pro-e.

For 2D drawing, laser cutting and manufacturing Drafting AutoCAD is the best and widely used software. In case of 3D modelling, you prefer CATIA or Nx CAD - Automobile Domain. Good for surface designs PTC Cero - Casting, welding or any manufacturing domain. It has Better features for GD&T and Sheet metal modelling) Solidworks and Fusion 360 - General purpose software mainly Rendering ,aesthetics and simulation. Good for 3D printing and robotics design

For a beginner, When it comes to part modelling or part design , SolidWorks and Fusion 360 can be relatively simple to learn and easy to work with. However, For an experienced CAD designer the choice of software will not be of major concern as most CAD software’s share a similar tool palate and can be easily understood.

3D software is must. You must make all parts in 3D and make assembly with desired sequence in 3D software, this will generate automatic BOM. PTC creo is also one of best software which can be combined with windchill for excellent system

There's no such thing as THE "BEST TOOL". What do you need it for? How much time do you have? What skill set is already in-house? Example: Most comparisons I've seen between NASTRAN and ANSYS will show that expert user-versus- expert user, NASTRAN normally comes out a bit on top. That said, I have trained a junior engineer to get reasonable answers from ANSYS in a day. That won't happen in NASTRAN. Similarly, CAD simulation tools are often super easy to use but have more limitations and more likely to have incorrect settings for your exact analysis.

In terms of 3D modelling of mechanical components, FEA software is not the best tool to use. The best use of FEA is for simulation and optimization of the design. With the use of FEA software, the designer can determine the behavior of the mechanical component when applied with various loads and conditions based on the functional and environmental requirements. Depending on the FEA results, the designer can then apply adjustments to optimize the current design.

CAM Software is not the best tool to use in terms of 3D modelling of mechanical components. But if you want to simulate how your mechanical component can be created, this is where CAM software comes in. This helps engineers to program machines to create components directly from the CAD software.

I will suggest for solids works with cam.This is very easy to use and we can do 3D model long as well as Part programming also. The tool creating facility in cam library is awesome feature as it helps in running complex 5 axis tools.

I think '3D modeling Software' is far too vague because the use cases are can be dramatically different (e.g. 3d modeling for visualization vs gaming vs engineering design vs simulation vs manufacturing). There isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' choice here.

Reverse engineering parts back to digital copies works very efficiently with a 3D Scanner. You can basically "paint" the part with a laser and it can generate a solid model. This tech is also used to compare parts to prints for a quality check.

Before diving into these tools, visualize your part!! this helps in determining the requirements and then working towards its completion.
