For last 2 years, I was interviewing the candidates to build our GIS team with no to little experience. I've had the privilege of connecting with many of them through phone calls and virtual sessions, and I must say, the passion and potential I've witnessed are truly remarkable. It's clear that the next generation is embracing geospatial intelligence with vigor, and it's incredibly exciting to witness firsthand. The only concern I have felt was, in some cases the candidates were more bothered about certain sophisticated outputs where the basic understanding about the work/project were clearly missing. So, I always give preference to the candidates with strong basics over trending skills.

Prefer prior domain-specific knowledge and relevant work experience for your project's needs 8. Finally, value individuals with effective communication skills

Finding people with a genuine passion for GIS, that are technically savvy, and resourceful - basically, look for the unicorns.

I'd seek individuals proficient in GIS software like ArcGIS, QGIS, and programming languages such as Python. I'd prioritize candidates with experience in spatial analysis, data visualization, and database management. Additionally, strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively would be essential criteria for selection.

Apart from familiarities with those softwares such as ArcGIS, QGIS etc, undeniably the ability to code in Python or Javascript is increasingly important in this field. That makes me feel that geospatial analysis is increasingly becoming a data science subject. Many people I have talked to, they are moving to use python in QGIS that runs plugin with Google Earth Engine API. It is really interesting to see this shift happening.
