You need to back up your research data. What’s the best tool for the job?

Cloud storage has indeed been a life-saver for me. It is not only important for backing up research data, but also for providing accessibility, scalability, and security. Storing research data in the cloud ensures that it is accessible from anywhere, and it helps facilitate collaboration among various researchers and providing a fall-back option against local hardware failures or data loss. Also, a good feature is its scalability, which allows researchers to expand their storage needs easily as their data grows. However, it has a flip side too. Potential security concerns may arise, as reliance on external servers raises issues of data privacy and unauthorized access.

Cloud storage is indeed the best way to backup data storage but for effectively utilizing cloud storage it's necessary to have a look at the data size which will give us an idea about how much capacity of cloud storage is needed. It will also help us to plan our budget spending on the services accordingly.

When going with Cloud systems, just make sure the privacy policies of said system is good enough of the they of data you are working with

Cloud storage is the king to store your data. It will be good if you assimilate google drive or teams in your pc/laptop anf back up your data for every 3 days to avoid missing too much data

I use an external hard drive in combination with the primary cloud storage. Some research equipment (Specific to life sciences research - microscopy, PCR, etc.) may not be connected to the internet/cloud, so a hard drive helps shuttle massive datasets between devices. Consider the risks of theft or loss of your data. I recommend making a strict rule of transferring data from the hard drive to your cloud storage as soon as possible and keeping the dedicated hard drive locked at work if possible (avoid taking it home).

Best Practice is to follow the 3-2-1 Rule:Keep 3 copies of your files in 2 different locations, with 1 copy off-site, ideally in a different geographic zone. Accidents DO happen: hardware fails, media deteriorates, drives are lost, computers/laptops are stolen, data files are corrupted by viruses, power failures and even human errors. Backup often: Select a schedule that works for you, and follow it. Use a reliable medium and test your backups periodically by testing file restores.

The choice will depend on how important you consider the information you want to store and the cost you are willing to bear. For example, if it's movies, it might not be worth paying for a cloud service, and an external hard drive could be more suitable. On the other hand, if it involves sensitive accounting information, then replicating the information in different media and geographic locations is probably the best option to minimize the risk of information loss.
