You need to automate your security operations. How can you do it with SOAR?

SOAR for me really is SAR or Streamlined Accelerated Response. Breaking down cybersecurity in three phases 1) Prevention 2) Detection 3) Response. SOAR falls into the response phase that allows wherein it helps to A - have a threat oriented case management of multiple point detections coming in from sources such as SIEM, UEBA, EDR, Email, NDR, EASM and many more.. B - Ability to respond at speed of machine by leveraging automation. Popular use cases are automated context enrichment or triage or investigation playbooks. Net net Automation is just 1/3rd of value coming from SOAR.. Threat Intel Management and Security Case Management being other 2

Identify use cases in the following category: 1) Known/routine task: let's say phishing investigation wherein you have established SOP. See how easy and scalable it is to implement this process using SOAR playbooks 2) New Threats/Something which you don't really have a fixed SOP. In this case, see how well SOAR lets you understand the threat and how much time it takes you to complete the response

SOAR, when implemented with Sentinel and Azure Logic Apps, offers a powerful combination for cybersecurity. SOAR can leave a sour taste when attempted to implement without having processes. Here are my suggested prerequisites 1) identify all threat detection sources that will feed into SOAR 2) focus on what artifacts (technical indicators) to extract from point alerts and how to enrich them with information required by analysts to make decisions. 3) have playbooks to block/unblock indicators (ex block ip, block user etc). These can be triggered by a human analyst or included in a larger SOP playbook. 4) Have clarity on how do you triage/prioritize a given alert or case. Automated them 5) pick 3-4 SOP to convert them into a playbook. Remember SOAR can help you even by automating collection of response from a user on Slack/teams

Three challenges of implementing SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response) are: Complexity: Setting up and configuring SOAR systems can be complex and may require significant expertise to ensure proper integration with existing security tools and processes. Resource Requirements: Implementing SOAR can demand substantial resources in terms of time, budget, and skilled personnel, which may be a barrier for smaller organizations. False Positives: Automation in SOAR can lead to false positives if not carefully tuned, potentially overwhelming security teams with alerts that require investigation and causing unnecessary disruption.

By implementing Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) you can significantly reduce response times, improve consistency in security operations, and free up your security team to focus on more complex tasks. 2 things that comes in my mind when thinking SOAR implementation will be the playbook development and automated response actions.

Automation is looked at as last option when it comes to cybersecurity. But the situation is changed a lot in recent days coz of exponential increase in cyber threats. Automation in cybersecurity is not inevitable but every organizations are at different levels of adopting automation using SOAR. Reducing MTTD and MTTR are compelling factors. Some of the key use cases which a SOAR solution can solve are - > Enhance and improve the incident response. > Resolve alerts which are mundane in nature. > Improve compliance > Achieve the accepted level of automation for SOC efficiency.
