You have a fleet of vehicles. How can you keep your drivers safe and accountable?

We're implementing smart telematics for smart mobility: (1) speed and driving style monitoring - state-of-the-art technologies which are activated during every ride that monitor speeding, aggressive driving style using sensors already integrated within the driver's smartphone. When bad driving style is detected, we send notifications to the driver, and if he does not stop – he gets blocked after he gets to the destination. (2) safety features – a series of existing safety features such as the SOS button to contact local authorities, and the ability to contact the support team in emergencies. (3) GPS – access to all the details about the driver, including car color & number, contact details, and real-time route monitoring right in the app.

Follow these 4 steps: A. Prioritize ALL road safety and policy education for your drivers. B. Begin with a basic on-boarding or company training session to set expectations from get go. C. Insist on verifying fleet maintenance and inspections are completed timely. D. Maintain good communication with dispatchers, follow news reports on weather conditions and stay in contact.

You need to start with Driver engagement as they are onboarded. Keeping drivers' safe can be done through the use of telematics and personal trackers which works more or less. Telematics assist Fleet Managers to track the whereabouts of their drivers, consignments as well as their assets. Personal tags or tracking devices which has to be with the person at that time can also be used to locate the driver in case of an unfortunate incident like hijacking. In South Africa there's only few companies who offers personal tracking devices

Irrespective if the drivers are contracted or on your own payroll, they are your direct reps to a customer as brand ambassadors. Right from recruitment, ensure that drivers resonate with realistic expectations from the service and the product. They need to be onboarded with sensitivity such that they know what is expected of them, how they will be appraised and what is their growth opportunity - just like any other employee.

GPS is great. However, the new camera systems that alert for driving behavior and either verify violations are clear violations, have taken fleet management to a new level.

Telematics works wonders but is at the mercy of those interpreting the data. Organizations who pride in owning volumes of data, but know nothing of how to use this information to provide feedback, driver development etc. have lost the battle very quickly. One sure shot solution, is to have a driver rep sit in the development of the telematics tool.

From my past experience the best features and tools of telematics will be as follow: - GPS tracking, which is almost available for all fleets all around the world. Yet, we can extend it to GPS tracking through satellite in such cases in rural roads where there's no signal. - ADAS which stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, in which it helps drivers to focus and avoid road dangers like blind spots, collision avoidance, and night vision in some cases - DMS which stands for Driver Management System, in which an installed camera detect the driver behavior whether driver distraction, smoking, yawning, and so on to guarantee safer roads

Additionally, I would establish clear protocols for reporting accidents or incidents, conduct regular performance evaluations, and incentivize safe driving behavior through rewards and recognition programs. This combination of proactive measures and transparent monitoring helps promote a culture of safety and accountability among drivers.

In order to implement for telematics you have to take in consideration the following steps before starting it: 1- Initiation: You need to make a clear plan of what you are actually in need to help your drivers, whether in terms of technology and features, or in terms of risks you are currently facing. 2- Planning: You start to plan after initiating and identifying what you are looking for in terms of main features required, hardware needed, required personnel, costing and technologies used. 3- Execution: Start putting your systems in action and test whether they are effective or needs more enhancements 4- Monitoring: Monitor your systems and features to be able to take corrective actions if needed.

Telematics, while not a new concept and indeed quite established (existing for more than 15 years), can see accelerated expansion through regulatory actions (as seen in Italy) and advancements in technology such as 5G and future generations of wireless connectivity. However, its widespread adoption will hinge on two critical factors: 1) the willingness of drivers to share their data, and 2) the value provided to the driver/owner by insurers or other service providers. For telematics to be broadly embraced, it must be perceived as a benefit rather than an additional expense.
