Appeals to conscious consumers We've found that, although there are not many biodegradable options on the market today, some projects in consumer goods were not possible without being biodegradable. The best application we have found was products that were deployed in the far forest to help regenerate from forest fires. Biodegradable in my opinion as a solution is so lazy to even consider, you won't find a statue made of PLA being chewed by turtle till it is consumed, the matter of which the material's half life should be within applicable range to call it biodegradable, making a wallet out of orange peels is more likely to be called "biodegradable" fast enough to not consider it a waste. Recycling however is the most effecient way to keep our planet clean and even beneficial for us makers, getting back all extra materials to reuse it in products and useful things.

The biodegradable filaments are being misguided in the present day. Completely biodegradable filaments are majorly a matter of research (only a handful of certified material with costing equivalent to diamond) and will need time to come into commercialisation. For Instance, PLA is said to be biodegradable in general but PLA filaments are not degradable when left in nature. They need specific conditions to degrade and it is difficult to find such a facility in India. So it would be best to voluntarily adopt/ collaborate with agencies/researchers who are working towards sustainability and promote them. Plastic waste around the world continues to be a growing problem. Our oceans continue to be a dumping grounds for trash and plastics which is unsustainable for human and animal life. Most 3d prints are used for research and then simply thrown away well within their usable life. Biodegradable plastics are a great solution to applications where heat or stress is on expected for the part.

Biodegradable materials are available in a wide range of formulations, making them suitable for various 3D printing applications, from medical devices to consumer products and packaging.

I have not encountered completely biodegradable materials for 3D printing. If we are talking about PLA, the material which best fits this description, its main advantage is low toxicity during filament melting. For example, ABS is highly toxic when melted. Additionally, PLA is simpler when it comes to selecting printing parameters and post-processing.

So-called biodegradable materials are more harmful than advertised, so the solution is to ban materials found in groundwater and create a list of authorized materials.

Whilst PLA is technically biodegradable, research shows this is limited to industrial composting/anaerobic digestion. There is no data support its biodegradability in home compost, soil, or landfill. Despite its lower carbon footprint compared to other plastics, understanding the actual science and practicality behind these claims is crucial. Ensure responsible disposal of PLA to make the most of its eco-friendly benefits, for example, recycling of PLA via dedicated 3D printing waste management services.

The most crucial aspect is that these materials need to be developed and integrated into the field of 3D printing. Currently, for prototyping and the production of less structurally demanding parts, PLA and its analogs are commonly used. From an ecological perspective, this is much better than using materials like PET-G or ABS, especially considering the toxicity of ABS during melting. All plastic waste should be collected and sorted. The ideal next step is recycling the material to produce secondary raw materials and new filament. When this isn't possible, industrial composting of the material is desirable. Otherwise, PLA waste, similar to other types of plastics, will persist in landfills for years, leaching into the soil.

The most important thing is to find products where biodegradability is an advantage - everyday items, interior design, lighting, etc. The worst thing that can be done today is to try to introduce bioplastics to areas where they will be completely ineffective due to weaker physical and chemical properties and insufficient mechanical strength. This may ultimately do more harm than good to the cause. Responsible additive manufacturing means finding the best alternatives to traditional plastics.

Manage your expectations. All materials have pros/cons. As stated, many times, if your definition of biodegradable and what the material actually needs to biodegrade do not line up with your design expectations, then move on.

Select the appropriate biodegradable material for your specific application. Consider factors such as the intended use, environmental conditions, and required durability.

3D Printing is still a very young technology with advancements being made all the time. However, for most common applications, the materials used in 3D printing need to have a narrow band of characteristics (chain length, melting temperature, viscosity, etc). Because plastics have been researched and developed so heavily in the past, it is relatively easy for additive manufacturing researchers to find plastics that meet all of the necessary material properties. However, it is much harder to find biodegradable materials that already exist with the same characteristics. Research is currently being done for them, but in its current state, print quality is generally sacrificed when using biodegradable materials.

PLA is actually the most commonly used material used for 3d printing. It is widely available in multiple of colors, does not require an enclosure or higher temperatures (above 240 degrees where PTFE tube starts melting) and is completely safe to print in unventilated space. It also allows for high speed printing and has great bridging potential. PLA should not be used in environments where temperatures can reach up to 60 degrees (ex. car interior) as it starts melting. It also fractures instantly upon failure with no deformation.

Paradoxically, the biggest problem of bioplatics from the point of view of the end user of things made of them, is their biodegradability... Nowadays, "biodegradability" is often a matter of the current fashion for "being eco". People choose biodegradable solutions without knowing what the consequences of this choice are. Bioplastics are weaker and less durable than synthetic plastics, but user expectations are the same in both cases. Biodegradability cannot be simply "turned on" when we no longer need a given item. It progresses all the time. Biodegradable plastics require compromises and appropriate expectations of what we get in return for being sustainable or eco-friendly.

Actually I disagree with the third point. PLA which is a bio-polymer is available in various colors and textures. Part printed with PLA also have very good aesthetics.

It is essential to continue developing biodegradable and compostable materials for 3D printing. Simultaneously, along with the production of such materials, it is crucial to advance technologies for recycling waste from these materials or their secondary use. Currently, there are not many organizations dedicated to collecting and recycling 3D printing waste, but it's already wonderful that they exist. Some of them include Printerior (USA), Recycling Fabrik (Germany), 3D Tomorrow (UK), and PRUSA (Czech Republic).

Less Waste: Biodegradable materials reduce the volume of plastic waste generated during 3D printing, as they can eventually break down into non-toxic components. Easier Disposal: Biodegradable prototypes can be disposed of more responsibly, reducing the burden on landfills and incinerators.

Fifth, They are easy to process in a 3D printer. They can be processed in all entry level 3D printers. The printing process for these materials can be easily optimized. Most of the time, the optimized printing process is readily available in the slicing software.

PLA can be sourced from many organic sources. Right now it's easy to pull it from corn or cane sugar in the US. But I'd like to see PLA sourced from waste products like corn husk, yard trimmings, or mulched trees. Using waste products would free up food resources while generating a second income stream for farmers and food processors.

The main advantage of bioplastics over synthetic plastics is that they will disappear one day. "Forever plastics" will remain with us forever. Nevertheless, we must remember that the decomposition of bioplastics in the soil is not an ideal solution - the soil in which tons of plastic decompose will be degraded anyway and will be problematic, e.g. in food crops. However, this is still a "lesser evil" than gigatons of synthetic plastics that pollute land and oceans. Microplastics are the invisible killer of life - from plants, through insects and animals, to humans. The best solution is reducing plastic as a whole.

The future of biodegradable materials like PLA hinges on enhancing their practical biodegradability in practical settings including home compost, soil, and landfills. Current limitations are met with innovation and research to develop materials and methods ensuring efficient breakdown in various environments. Collaboration among scientists, environmentalists, and stakeholders is crucial. The goal is real sustainability - minimising environmental impact by championing materials that truly decompose, ensuring the health of our planet alongside meeting our material needs.

Think saying they are the future of 3D printing is a bit far fetched. They will surely have their place and will certainly act as a means to keep interest and garner continued focus in the field, but surely won't be applicable in many of the applications that the technology has been touted as being a game changer for. For instance, a biodegradable implant is only good if that trait is desired.

It's crucial to consider the intended use, durability, and end-of-life requirements when choosing between biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials for 3D prototyping, as biodegradable materials may not be suitable for all applications. Additionally, sustainable 3D printing also involves optimizing design and production processes to minimize material waste and energy consumption.

Adapting "Circular Economy" approach can drastically improve sustainability. The uses must use certified bio-degradable filaments and also ensures they have an facility to recycle the waste materials in-house. This process will ensure that waste is minimized. The uses can also use renewable energy to power printers to enhance sustainability.

I ask my students this question: "If it's biodegradable, non-toxic, decreased carbon footprint....but is it edible?" The answers always make me laugh.
